S1 - Line of regression

Hey could anyone please explain in simple terms the difference between a line of regression y on x and x on y.

You usually have y on x because x is the independent variable so y on x tells us what y we will get when we put a value of x in


In addition, the value of a for y=a+bx a will tell you the value of y when x is 0 and vice versa

When you've been given x and you need to work out y then that ( y=a+bx) equation the right one to use but she you're given y and need to work out x then you need the equation x=a'+b'y where b'=Sxy/Syy and a'=(mean of x)-b(mean of y).
This is the inverse of the other equation but isn't necessarily equal to the other one so you'll have to use this one in your S1 exam.
Plus this is given in the formula booklet so you'll have to learn it unfortunately :frown:
