Thanks for the replies.

I had been looking at Birmingham, Cardiff, Liverpool, Nottingham, Newcastle, Manchester and RHUL amongst others.

If it were Liverpool I would probably go for Ancient History, Egyptology and Philosopy, dropping Philosophy in the second year.

I am a little limited where I can apply as I'm not a straight A person unfortunately! I think I'll be predicted ABC which hamstrings me a little. Ancient History and Egytpology at UCL sounds fantastic but I imagine that's AAB. Still unsure what I will be combining it with though, possibly with English or Classics, definitely with other arts subjects though. Will have to decide soon!

Not sure how respected the degree is, or will be by employers, but I know I'll find it very interesting.

If it helps, my UCL offer (for Classics) is ABC, including B in Latin. All my other offers were BBB. Because so few people are interested in Classics-type courses, the grades tend to be lower than for the vastly popular subjects. You should be able to find some indication of probable grade requirements in the university prospectus.
Most Humanity degrees are equally well-respected by employers, they tend not to insist that you have x subject because you don't usually need that kind of specialised knowledge, it's more about your skills. Things like English, Classics, History, Languages, maybe Philosophy, Archaeology, would all combine well with Ancient History/Egyptology.
Hi! I'm hopefully starting Classical Civilisation at Birmingham this Sept. Haven't met anyone else who is. Hope it won't just be me. I applied for St Andrews as was told it was best for Classics outside Oxbridge and visited and set my heart on it and was cruelly rejected. Sob!!
Class. civ student due to start at Nottingham here. Good day to you all! To "Amour" my offer for Nottingham is ABC so you would be ok there. Also if you do decide to apply for a Classics course joint with English then remember that the grades required will rise. For Exeter the English and classics joint honours course requires AAA.
Im going for Egyptian Archaeology at Liverpool and a combined course of Egyptology, English and Popular music, again at Liverpool in 2006

Does anyone know how much of a disadvantage not having a language As is going to be to get onto the Egyptology course?

The requirement at UCL is for students to have French or German GCSE. I imagine other universities would be similar. As far as I know (and again at UCL), once you start your course, there are opportunities to attend language classes in French/German in addition to Ancient Egyptian.

Hope that helps. Have a look at Liverpool's website, they may well have information on minimum requirements. If not, give the department a call - I'm sure they will be happy to answer any questions.

Good luck. I'm starting Ancient History and Egyptology in five weeks' time and can't wait...
