CHEM4: How do you know to name the Benzene ring Phenyl- or Benzene-?

How do you know when the prefix is Phenyl- or Benzene-?

e.g. Benzaldehyde and Phenylethanone

Why can't it be named Phenylethanal?

Thank you.

alkyl groups are named with phenyl. For example, methyl, ethyl etc. Phenylethanone, phenylmethanoate etc
