And I adore TEDDY BEARS!

I started most of my GCSEs in Y9 so I'm not nervous about Y10. I'm happy about seeing friends everyday :jumphug: and dreading the deadlines and work  I'm excited about the new books though! And I just love the general atmosphere of school! :excited:

Elliwhi: Hi, I'm Ellie. I'm 14 at the moment but 15 in April. I play piano (Grade 7 exam in December) and clarinet (working towards Grade 3/4) and do a lot of athletics (long jump and hurdles). I try to do as much reading in Russian and English depending on how much work I have :P In less than 2 weeks, I'll carry on these subjects at school: Maths, English Lit, English Lang, Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Triple Science) IGCSE, French, Music, Latin and History.

You may think because I'm doing triple science and Latin that I want to be a doctor. No, I'm not being a doctor even if my mother thinks I should because my Biology skills are too "amazing" to be a doctor xD - just kidding. I suck at biology.

However I am looking at going into finance or music. I'm really stuck at what to do as a career as I have so many options and want to do so many things. I've been going down one path and now I'm at cross roads. D:

I sat my Russian GCSE this June (because I'm actually Russian) and got A* in all the units and am really happy with that! ^_^ :russia:

After Year 11, I'll hopefully stay at my current school for Sixth Form and definitely do Russian A Level. I will probably end up doing Languages with Music or Finance (or both).

Year 10? That'll probably be one heck of a roller coaster. I really would like to know who will be teaching me and who will be in my classes.

I love sports, specifically basketball and football - but I despise athletics  - watching Suits, eating food and sleeping. My mindset towards school has only changed within the last few months. I used to be all about basketball and I was highly passionate about it, but then I looked into Law and was inspired, so I dropped my dream of being a professional basketball player and decided I'd like to be a Lawyer instead. Soooooo ... please bare with me, as I'm definitely at a higher level of ignorance than you guys because I'm new to the whole 'caring about school' thing - I don't even know what boards my subjects are. But maybe someday I'll fit into this little clique.

Here is some advice from CactiQueen and Arithmeticae (both are now in Year 12).

    Advice from CactiQueen ^_^:
    (Original post by CactiQueen)
Hello I am Becca and I am in Year 11
    For Gcses I took IT,Art,Geography,History,Media 1, Media 2, English Lit,English Language,Corse Science, Additional Science
I have some tips for the Year 10s for starting gcses, revision etc

My tips for starting GCSE :-) xx

you'll be learining everything that could come up in your exam. You may do end of topic tests, mocks and closer to your exams do practice papers. For the rest of your other subjects basically the same- learning what you need to know in the exam but also familiarising yourself with the subject and how to answer exam questions etc. For subjects like English you will have coursework and you do a lot of your coursework in Year 10.

-Do your best in your coursework (it can higher your grade quite considerably)
-Try get the coursework out of the way so you're not stressing with deadlines and when you have a 100000 other commitments
-Pay attention in class so when nearer to the time of exams, all you're learning is stuff you already know (this will also make you feel abit more stress free for exam time)
-If you're given a rubbish target grade, don't listen to it, you can do sooo much better!
-Don't worry about being exam ready, there is plenty of time to pratice, perfect. (It is quite funny in Year 11 reading your first ever coursework essay that you wrote at the start of Year 10 because you improve so much!)
    -Enjoy yourself, enjoy your subjects.
-You don't need to start stressing yet, you have plenty of time to learn all you need to know in time for the exams.
-Do the best you can in your science exams (A lot of people in my year didn't really take it seriously and didn't listen in class so they had to retake the exams in Year 11 which made them have even more exams along with the massive work load :/ )

Some good resource sites for Science Edexcel board (not sure what board you're doing)
    -Pearson Active Learn

    Other good sites for GCSE
    -SAMlearning
    -BBC Bitesize

    For revision-

-Start revising as early as possible, this will make when you go through things in lessons more clearer. Go through things more than three times.

-Have regular breaks. When your concentration span has gone, nothing will go in! So work for 20-30 minutes and then have a 15 minute break.

-Plan what hours you work best at. I find I work best in the evening, so I plan an early tea and get everything I need to get done in the day.

-plan treats for yourself for working so you have something to look forward to. Go see friends, relax, cinema. Plenty of sleep to let you absorb the info.

-Sites such as Pearson active learn,GCSE Sam, BBC bitesize are super helpful for GCSE year 10 Core Science. You can watch videos, play games, do quizzes.

    - try out different techniques of learning= writing, mind mapping, drawing, listening, watching

-colourful posters around the house, might jog your memory in the exam!

-what colours do you pick up best? For example I don't pick out yellows too well so I don't use yellow when mind mapping.

-healthy diet= yummy home made food, fruit snacks

-exercise= go for walks, a morning run, fresh air

-limit your internet use=take away your phone, facebook, twitter to avoid distractions and then have it back once you have done the amount of work as a reward

-set reasonable goals for yourself (is working non stop for 6 hours reasonable? You need breaks!

-make some sacrifices...remember once the exams are over you have 6 weeks of free time doing nothing yaaaay summer holidays!

-don't stay up revising till super late at night, you need time to process the info and beauty sleep!!

-time table your hours= say you do 20 minutes of biology in the morning, and some physics in the afternoon

    -colour coding might help

-make rhymes, songs whatever helps to remember things!

-don't panic yourself, you will do fine, work hard, look after yourself, reward yourself, have plenty of breaks

    Hope I helped you guys

Year 10 was my favourite year in Secondary school, you have a lot to look forward to
I wish you all the best for GCSE. I loved GCSE, tough at times near the end but as long as you work hard, it will pay off

I am collecting my Year 11 results in less than a week! It is good to start revising early, that's what I did :-) x x

    All the best x x

    Advice from Arithmeticae ^_^:
    (Original post by Arithmeticae)
hi there, i did my gcses last year so hopefully this will help

    general revision tips

    · find out what works for you, and don't just do something because your friends are doing it - it doesn't matter if all your friends have made pretty flash cards in 50 different colours, if it doesn't help you then don't bother

    · if you're doing a subject like history, geography or biology that requires lots of memorising of facts, you might want to check out some memory techniques (my favourite is the method of loci/memory palace )

    · short chunks of revision are much better than long drawn out sessions, unless you're some kind of machine your attention span is probably 30 mins max so take regular breaks to avoid burnout (see this for further info)

    · make a revision timetable when it comes to proper revision time and stick to it (if you're super prepared, you might want to start planning now ) - i believe tsr has a program that does this for you

    · get a copy of your specification asap and use it properly - look through the topics in there as a checklist and cross reference with other revision resources (DO NOT USE THE SPEC ON ITS OWN AS IT IS SERIOUSLY LACKING IN DETAIL)

    · factor in some chill out time to go out, don't try and spend all your free time revising as all it does is make you really bored

    · you might want to check out online flash card programs like anki or Mnemosyne which automatically adjust themselves so that the stuff you forget comes up more

    · ignore what people on tsr say about not revising for gcse's, most of them are bs-ing anyway lol. on the other hand, you really don't need to start that early and imo starting proper revision at Easter time should be plenty

    · try and print everything out you need - maybe this is just me but i can't work properly on a computer without being distracted every 5 mins and having physical copies prevents that

    · before exams, make sure to read past mark schemes and examiners reports to see what they're looking for - some exams are very specific with terminology and if you don't use the right words, you won't get the marks regardless of how well you understand a topic.

    · imo the best thing you can do to prepare for an exam is probably go repeat past papers until you can comfortably get full marks or close, it won't help you understand something but it does get you familiar with what examiners want which tbh is the most important thing

    english

    • lots and lots of practice papers, get your teacher to mark them cos english is pretty subjective
    • learn to write well, practice essays and develop your writing style
    • keep quotes short and to the point, embedded quotes are the best to use imo
    • plan your structure out in advance, have an idea of how you will lay your paragraphs out (if you forget to use paragraphs make sure you add the // sign or you could be limited to a C)
    • never ever make vague comments like 'the title is bold to draw the reader's attention', target everything specifically towards the articles you have, the more focused the better
    • if you're really out of ideas, just make up some bs about the articles you're reading (remember to make it targeted though!) - it doesn't matter if you can't actually see it because opinions are subjective
    • learn your command words - what to do for an explain question, how an argue question is different etc..

    sciences

    • learn the core content off by heart, you should be able to roll off definitions without much thought cos these will normally be about 10 easy marks
    • lots of past papers - as i stressed before this is the best way to get used to what teh examiners want
    • make sure you can do calculations - especially for physics and chemistry these are easy marks if you're good with maths
    • understand instead of regurgitate - blindly memorising stuff is all good until you get a question that actually tests your understanding, then you're ****ed
    • a lot of the topics are repetitive, use this to your advantage - some triple content may be covered in core or other sciences (carbon cycle in core chem and add bio)

hope this helps and don't hesitate to quote/pm me if you have any more questions
