    Hello:wavey:WelcometoTheCurrentYear9Thread2014-2015!

So, I've noticed that there have been quite a few Year 9s in the GCSE forum recently and thought I would make a thread for y'all so that you can talk to each other and discuss your options

    Ice Breaker Questions:
    - Introduce yourself!
    - How are you finding Year 9?
    - What are you thinking of choosing for GCSE?
    - How do you feel about starting GCSEs?
    - What are your hobbies + Interests?

    Meet the Year 9s

    Elijah Wilkinson
Hey, I'm in year 9 and am currently picking my options; I know they don't matter much but some advice would be great. I've picked Further Maths (you have to pick it no matter the set in my school), Triple Science (once again have to pick no matter the set) Geography, History and French. On top of the obvious compulsory English Lit, Lang, Maths, Double Science, R.E and P.E. Anyone who's taking any of these options, could you please give me an overview/rating of them and some advice? I'm hopefully aiming for straight A*s and long to pursue a levels/career in the sciences/maths but still unsure. Anyways, would be great if someone could get back to me!

I think I'm taking OCR Triple Science, AQA Geography and OCR History for my options. I've already done AQA French speaking/writing assessments and I'm doing the reading and listening exams in May so I've already got a bit of GCSE experience now luckily.

Hi, I'm in year 9, I've got until April to hand in my options form.

At moment my 5 choices are:
    Spanish
    Geography
    Sports science
    Drama
    Reserve: Business studies

I'm still a little unsure about drama, but my teacher strongly recommends that I should consider it as an option

Hi, my name is Matthew and I am 14.
I am finding Year 9 okay, started getting into trouble a lot, don't know why..
I have already chose my GCSE's but it comprises in 9 GCSE's and 3 BTECs so 12 GCSE in total: English Lang & Literature, Double Science, Maths, RE&PE (compulsory)
Geography, Business Studies, Health & Social Care, Product Design and Media (I am going to chose that in Y10 for Y11.) (I chose)
I am actually quite excited about starting my GCSEs finally something I will like to do!
My hobbies are Politics (quite unusual for my age, but good I guess) and Psychology.

So, hello I'm Megan, year 9, and finding it alright.
I've picked PE, Drama, Triple Science and History as my options for GCSE
I love sports haha and I do athletics, horse riding, judo and dance (ballet and modern )
    Sooo yeah aha

    Upseedasy
    I've chosen French,Sociology and History.

    Vicaboo
I'm currently in year 9 and I have chosen my GCSE options already. This list will include what I have to do as well as what I picked.
    • English (Language and Literature)- AQA
    • Maths- Edexcel
    • Triple science- AQA
    • Core PE- AQA
    • History- OCR
    • Drama- Edexel
    • GCSE PE- OCR

Back up options (We had to pick three!)
    1) IT (Computing)
    2) Psychology
    3) RS
I can't remember what the exam boards for these are.

    Treblebee
I'm currently in year 9, but am taking History this year (because, yeah, I'm home educated)! I have already decided that all I'm doing is History plus the normal six, because I want to spend more time "developing an interest", which is apparently what they really look for (at least in home schoolers) at uni. I'm already in my first year for the sciences (those and the History are online courses), and I'm gonna take maths this January, because it should only take me one term to plough through it (at least, my brother managed it:/), and will take the two English courses in year 11 as "correspondence courses" - basically, I have to do all the work myself, and the teacher just marks my essays. Plus, I'm hoping to take FSMQ in the January of year 11. So the GCSEs are spread out.
Hoping to take lots of A-levels, though - Chem, Phys, Bio, Maths and Further Maths. I want to do Natural Sciences at Uni, as my interest is bees, and I want to study them when I'm older. So lots of plans there!

    LEuphoria
Hi everyone! I'm 14 and currently in Year 9. I've been lurking around TSR for a while now, but I finally feel like I should post something, since this does apply to me, haha.

I'm choosing History, French, Religious Studies and Triple Science for my options at GCSE, along with my school's compulsory subjects which are English Lang + Lit, Maths, Personal Development, PE(not looking forward to that one D: ) and Core Science. I'd like to do Further Maths, too, although I don't yet know whether my school offer this. I would really like to study Law one day, possibly at Cambridge, and I'm hoping my options will allow me to do so in the future. I'm unsure as to what PE course I'm going to be doing right now, as our school offers multiple courses, and they decide whether we do BTEC or GCSE, and even then, I'm not clear on the differences!

Alongside school, I love horse riding, art, reading and running. ^^

My advice to Year 9s for GCSE/Year 10

Firstly, starting GCSEs is nothing new, you may have learned stuff in KS3 and you may go over that again in depth or just touch on the topic. You may not at all depending on your teachers and the time you have. So don't stress before you've even started them!

Year 10 in my school wasn't very stressful imo (we'll be feeling all the stress in Year 11, apparently) it may have been for others though. But just remember to stay on top of your work, try not to fall behind (it's not a nice position to be in from experience, I regret the lack of work I put into stuff) do your homework and if you don't understand anything, ask your teacher or someone else who may know

Don't be put down by getting bad grades, at the beginning and middle of the year I got Cs and Ds  which I was annoyed at myself about, I think it was lack of revision and concentration in class. Figure out the problem you have and try to fix it. I've got B's mostly now and if I improve it further another 2 grades in Year 11 then I'd be really happy My teachers think this is quite likely, so I assume many people do improve up two grades in Year 11

If you ever feel like it's getting too much for you, take a break (it's good to take little breaks!) do something you enjoy like reading, gaming, drawing.. to relieve stress

Finally, PLEASE do the best you can in coursework/controlled assessments, otherwise you'll have a lot of work to catch up with/sort out at the end of revising which could take away a lot of your revision time. I have regrets with ICT coursework and I can see the stress of so many who are doing subjects like art/textiles/food tech too.

    So, just to remind you:
    - GCSEs are probably not completely new to you, so don't worry so much!
    - Don't fall behind (ask if you don't understand, do homework, concentrate)
    - Don't be put down by bad grades, you have enough time to improve the next 2 years
    - If it gets too much, take breaks :yep:
    - And probably the most important, try your best in coursework, it'll come back to bite you later in Year 11 :grumble:
