charges of ions

why is the formula of magnesium azide mgn6? in my exam it told me the azide ion was n3- and if magnesiums charge is 2+ then wouldnt it be mg3n2 so the charges would balance out? slightly confused.

I think you got a bit mixed up, the azide ion is N3- not N3-!

Oxidation state of manganese in the mnO4- ion? Would it not be +8 because oxygen is -2?
