Opinions on eSports Degree?

Saw this the other day, interested in other people's views on this as a career option! Personally I think this could be beneficial for the gaming industry and hopefully we see it as a regular career option in the future , but I am open to discussion on the matter!

I thought there were some comments from a guy at staffs who'd designed the course somewhere but I can't see them now.

Too soon to know what outcomes actual graduates are getting.

note that a lot of novel courses are deployed loudly and then dropped quietly after a few years.
e.g. there's a lot fewer forensic science degrees than there were a few years ago shortly after the CSI TV series came out and that the BSc surf science linked in that thread appears to have morphed into a 2 year FdSc delivered at a partner college. https://digital.ucas.com/search/results?SearchText=surf+science&ProviderText=&SubjectText=&AutoSuggestType=

Hi @jriby28

Please give us a shout if you have any particular questions. @Joinedup was correct, our course leader, Angela Lawrence did answer some questions on there so if you dig through the thread, you should be able to spot them.

Thanks

Amy
I think anyone should be able to study anything they want in order to pursue their career. In my opinion its less ludicrous than taking gender studies becasuse unless your going to become a theorist theres not much for job theorists in that

Where will you learn to cybersportsman? I don't know of any university that would teach to play Warcraft or Control Strike professionally.

That's not what this course is for...

Hey!

I actually know quite a bit about this course! I'm a Student Communications Ambassador for Staffs, so I get to go to all the events the uni puts on! I went to visit the first eSports open day talk last year, and then went to the opening of the eSports Hub this summer. And my partner started studying on this course in September!

It's really interesting - a combination of events management, coaching, streaming, marketing, presenting. Basically anything that goes into the creation of an eSports event. AND the Hub where they do most of their studying is awesome! They have a fully equiped gaming studio to set up actual tornaments in. Top of the range PCs, streaming cameras, super fancy and comfy chairs!

But yeah, I'm very jealous of the people on this course tbh. Aahhahahah.

Do the placement option as you will struggle to sell this degree to employers otherwise.

Very niche.
Hi all,
In response to @Nununu - Our course team have confirmed that they are in negotiations with Riot Games UK, Insomnia and Greahouse Broadcasting as potential placement opportunities.
Hope this helps ^SK
Just Started really well equipped Esports degree course here at Falmouth University within it's world leading Games Academy. I'm Senior Lecturer on the course and came down here to teach because of it's mind-blowing expertise in house.
We have hundreds of games dev students and dozens of expert lecturers but this years course was limited to ten places, this coming year will be twenty and the next year 30 so not just after bums on seats we are doing a sustainable build so we can assure the quality of the course as it expands. Bonus - you get to talk like a pirate!
