1 mm = 0.1 cm = 0.001 m

So squaring everything, we get:

1 mm^2 = (0.1)^2 cm^2 = (0.001)^2 m^2

So, to convert from mm to m the number will get smaller and we must divide.
Lets make 1mm an example.
First we will convert mm to cm, 1mm is equal to 0.1cm (There are 10mm in a cm)
- we must divide by 10 to get from mm to cm.

Now that we have 0.1cm, we will convert from cm to m. 1cm is equal to 0.01m (There is a 100cm in one metre).
-To get from cm to m we divide by 100

So, 0.1cm÷100= 0.001m.

Now that we know this, we need to remembee we are converting in SQUARES.
So, mm to cm will be divided by 10^2.
From cm to m it will be divided by 100^2.

If we divide by 10 to get from mm to cm and 100 from cm to m we divide by a total of a thousand correct? If we are going up in squares we must divide by 1000^2

1 mm = 0.01 cm = 0.001 m

So squaring everything, we get:

1 mm^2 = (0.01)^2 cm^2 = (0.001)^2 m^2

1mm is 0.1 cm

It is easy as hell, just be aware of the Latin derived meanings of the units:

1 mm is 1/1000 of a meter, so 0.001 m (milia = 1000)
1 cm is 1/100 of a meter, so 0.01 m (centum = 100)
1 dm is 1/10 of a meter, so 0.1 m (decem = 10)

And then you can do like RDKGames did:

1 = (0.001 mm)² = 0.000001 mm²

The Latin derivations are a good mneonic to keep in mind. Helped me to convert the units at least.
I will not assist you in trying to convert someone to your religion.

Have a nice day.
Think about a square with side length of 1 metre.
That's a square metre.

Now convert each length into mm.
That's 1000 mm on each side.

So the area is 1,000,000 square mm.

so 1square metre is same as a million square mm.
or
1 square mm is same as a millionth of a square metre.

We can do the same process with cubes, too.
Thinking about it this way is similar to thinking about L-A-V
