Two sprinters compete in a100m race, crossing the finishing line together after 12s.
Model A: the sprinter accelerates from rest at a constant rate for 4s and then travels at a constant speed for the rest oh the race.
a) For model A. Find the maximum speed and the initial acceleration of the sprinter.

Basic SUVAT.

The sprinter covers s=100m over time t=12s.

For the first 4 seconds, they travel with some acceleration aa after starting from rest (u=0). Write down the displacement (*) in terms of aa. What is the velocity (**) of this sprinter at the end of this 4 second period, in terms of aa?

For the next 8 seconds, they travel with zero acceleration (a=0) with initial velocity of (**). Write down the displacement (***) over these 8 seconds in terms of aa.

Add (*) and (***) since they make up the 100 metres, so you now have a single equation that aa satisfies. Solve for it. The maximum speed is obviously whatever (**) is, which you can determine once you know aa.
