The Student Room Group

RIP Sidhu Moose Wala

This man was a global icon, not just to fans of Punjabi music but to those who appreciate revolutionary Hip Hop. As an artist, the man pioneered an entire genre almost by himself, taking what was previously a very small niche in Punjab and turning it into mainstream Punjabi Hip Hop heard around the world.

For the uninitiated: he was shot dead in his car on 29th May while driving near his village in Punjab. Pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. He was only 28. Today (11th June 2022) would have been his 29th birthday.

Check out the thread I wrote about his music over a year ago:

And have a read for yourself about the impact he made through his music. BBC News don't often write about Punjabi music so when they do, you know it's serious business.

He's probably best known in the UK for his track 47 (feat. Steel Banglez, Mist and Stefflon Don). Check out Celebrity Killer (feat. Tion Wayne), IDGAF (feat. Morrison) and Invincible (feat. Stefflon Don) for more collaborations he did with British rappers. He left behind unfinished tracks with Stefflon Don and Burna Boy which will probably be released in the future, dedicated to his memory.

But the one track that started it all is this, from way back in 2017. If you've never heard of Sidhu, start by listening to this track on the biggest speaker with the loudest bass you can find. That's exactly how it's designed to be heard. 500 million views on a Punjabi Hip Hop track doesn't happen every day.

RIP Sidhu Moose Wala

Indeed. So many bangers from one artist, it's insane. He will be missed. It's easy to compare him to Tupac when we look at the impact of his music as well as the way he died. :frown:

I saw him on stage in January 2020. Had no idea it would be the first and last time I would see him.
RIP. He made a very small unknown district of Punjab globally known with his success. No one knew where Mansa was until he became a star.

Agreed. I think he mentioned in one of his music videos that he was the first person in his village to study for a degree, and that even buses don't go through his village. You know what they say - the most humble artists come from small beginnings. I hope his family achieves justice for him sooner rather than later.

Here's another BBC News article explaining what we know about the murder and the investigation so far.
