Notation about transition metal ions

As transition metals form ligands, is Cu2+ the same thing as [Cu(H2O)6]2+?
One of my textbooks says the reaction:
[Cu(H2O)6]2+ + 2OH- -> [Cu(OH)2(H2O)4] + 2H2O
is the same thing as
Cu2+ + 2OH- -> Cu(OH)2

Does this mean they are physically the exact same thing, same colour and all? If Cu2+ is in a solution surely it would just bond to water which makes me think they are exactly the same. Could anyone help explain if they are different things or not, thanks
They are the same
