Josephine Butler vs John Snow

Hello, all

I’m currently torn between Josephine Butler and John Snow as my top choice college. I love the bar, the atmosphere, the societies of Josephine Butler (and their fairly large rooms seem a bonus), but John Snow has more modern facilities, both as a stand-alone and shared with South College, and their rooms also look excellent.

Is there anything I’m missing that would tug me one way or the other? I visited both at the post-offer day, and was impressed by both of them, however, I only got to see a John Snow flat (Josephine Butler wasn’t available for viewing)

I’m currently a first year at John snow and something theyve been doing (which I don’t know if they’ll continue) is giving us free food every Wednesday. It’s a part of this thing that they do to support the students through exam/dissertation season. It’s been really nice to see how much they care about the students. Also the welfare team are really supportive. In my experience the best thing they’ve done is do the ask for a donut scheme. We all submitted questions to do with welfare to the instagram and they responded by giving us a donut and writing the answer of the paper bag. Till this day, I still have my answer pinned on my board

Hiya

Although there aren't many differences between the two, I can list some tiny ones that I know of:

1. A 3-year JCR levy for John Snow in 22-23 was £135 while the same for Butler was £146. The gym membership for Butler is also much cheaper than Snow but I haven't visited the Butler gym so don't know how modern it is. John Snow one is definitely new and has good equipment.

2. The societies at both are different, you can check them out here: https://www.johnsnowjcr.co.uk/societies ; https://www.instagram.com/p/CbXs8KqIWNs/?hl=en

3. Butler has all ensuite rooms while at John Snow, you may be sharing with one other person. You can also see a room tour for Butler here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gU9mDUur9g8

4. Here are student blogs from both colleges that you can read and find out more: Life at Butler, Life at John Snow

Thank you so much! This is wonderful
Hi how are the rooms allocated ? Will they allocate us based on the forms and then allocate each student per room or are students able to choose the rooms first based on first come first serve basis.

Hiya

I'm not sure if it's first come first served but you do get to choose a type of room in your preference form. This will be sent out once colleges are confirmed after results day. This isn't an issue for Butler because all rooms are ensuite so naturally everyone will get the same type. For John Snow, you can choose between an ensuite or a single room with a shared bathroom b/w 2. I've known most people to get the room of their choice but I think both are good options nevertheless.
