what should I do?

Hello,

I am currently on an apprenticeship in my chosen career but I have stumbled across a three-day (not paid) work experience in something I really enjoy which I want to do but I don't know if I should actually apply for it!

need help with making a decision asap!

if you want to do it you should, but would it be possible to do it whilst still being on your apprenticeship? if not, then you'll have to think whether it's worth leaving your apprenticeship and doing it, if you're successful in your application. either way, there's no harm in applying for it. however, if your apprenticeship is your chosen career, why do you want to do a 3 day unpaid work experience? is it related to a job that you'd prefer to do over your current apprenticeship?

I'm currently on a HR apprenticeship where I cover different topics but I really enjoy the recruitment but I don't get much opportunity to cover this and that's why I was thinking on applying for the 3 day work experience for me it's about gaining knowledge so the money aspect doesn't really bother me.

ohh i see, if that's the case, why don't you ask if you could cover/work more in the recruitment aspect? I was on an apprenticeship where i had a choice in what type of work I would spend most of my time doing, and it was mainly because i discussed it with my line manager and they were happy to let me do it, provided i would occasionally do other work during busier times. You could ask your manager or someone and see if it's possible - maybe this won't be possible straight away, but it could be something you start to specialise in after your apprenticeship ends

That's a good point! I will speak with my manager but do you think it's also ideal to do the work experience? As I hope to go into the recruitment side of things in HR once I finish my apprenticeship but also as my contract finishes next year I'm not sure if they will keep me on and if they don't at least I have that work experience in what I want to go into.

As long as it doesn't interfere with your apprenticeship I'd do it.
How about asking at your apprenticeship if you could cover recruitment a bit more.

usually, a company would keep their apprentice on but just in case it would be good to have that work experience, although you might be fine considering you've at least covered it before. i think you could do the work experience in that case, but also find out if you can cover recruitment more during your apprenticeship. if you'll be able to cover recruitment more during your apprenticeship, then you can decide whether or not you still want to do the work experience in that case, but definitely apply to it as a backup.

What about taking three days holiday to do the course? It's great to get experience but I hope you aren't thinking about doing this instead of your apprenticeship?
Hi there,

I would say you should apply for it. If its something you really want to do it can't hurt to give it a go and you'll regret not taking the chance later.

Should you be accepted though you may have to talk to your company about attending. You may be required to take some holiday from your apprenticeship or making other arrangements but I'm sure this can all be figured out later. Three days isn't too much time to miss.

Good luck!

If it's only 3 days then surely you can take a holiday or sick leave at work to attend. If it's something you're interested in, I think you should go for it. The more experience the better.
