The very first Hitchock movie I watched was Rear Window and I was thinking it would just be one of those classics that people hyped, but actually turned out to be very disappointing. It wasn't. It surprised me so much that it's one of my favourite films of all time.

It was the first Hitchcock film I saw as well and, of the films I've seen, it remains my favourite by him. I think hat Strangers on a Train is underappreciated by the general public. I seldom hear anyone mention that when they talk of Hitchcock's best films. I would have it in the top 5, if not the top 3.

I'm looking forward to La Règle du Jeu on Film4 on Thursday morning. I've never seen it and it is clearly one of the critics' favourites.

Spiderman 3 brought in some great revenue as well. Nearly $900 million on a budget of $258 million. But I'm guessing they opted for a reboot to reduce the costs. I'm not a fan of it being 'gritty'. That's Batman, it suits Batman. That's not Spiderman.

I've become pretty meh about The Avengers. It could turn out good, or it could suffer from having too many characters on screen. Man of Steel is another one to be on the fence about. Nolan has some hand in the situation, but looking over Snyder's recent work, it doesn't give much hope. But then again, Sucker Punch wasn't adapted from any source material and was an entirely new story - hence why it probably failed. Superman does have a lot of source material, giving him more to work with. And there's Zod so the promise of some exciting action than being kicked around by Lex Luthor. The Dark Knight Rises - that's the one to be hyped for. :coma:

Oh yeah, Thor's coming out soon. Those were the cluster of films I was referring to as 'insignificant'. Thor, Captain America and The Green Lantern. Not mainstream superheroes and not likely to do well commercially. I guess we'll see. And agreed, Natalie Portman is an odd choice for that film, and her presence in it as been relatively underhyped.

From what I've read, Sucker Punch failed due to being a sexist bunch of tripe masquerading as a "girl power" film but in all fairness, I haven't actually seen it.

The Avengers is partially written and directed by Joss Whedon so it does have the potential to be really good, I think. It's probably going to be one of those things that I expect to be awesome though and then get really disappointed by.

We're pretty popular. :gah:

:hi:

Welcome to the society and Chat thread. Feel free to post here about your favourite films, films you've recently watched on TV or in the cinema or films you're looking forward to. :h:

Helloo, thanks for the official welcome

Well I'm kind of trying to take a break from movie watching for a little while because I am v. easily distracted, but I caught a bit of Burn After Reading last night and it reminded me what a brilliant film it is! I love Brad Pitt's character, hilarious! Gotta love the Coen bros, saw No Country For Old Men for the first time a couple of days back too- really liked it, Javier Bardem does ****ed up REALLY well!

Insignificant when there's Spiderman, Superman, Batman, The Avengers (and Hulk) next year. :coma:

I think I'm more interested in the new X-Men film than all of those except Batman. I don't care about Snyder any more, certainly don't care about The Avengers and I've never really cared about Spiderman. Whereas Matthew Vaughn with a big budget and sackfuls of talented actors looks very cool.

I'm about to watch it now! And I also watched No Country for Old Men a couple of days ago - though I got incredibly tired towards the end (I've been sleeping early lately), so I'll have to re-watch it to actually make sense of it. Bardem was brilliant, though: it was quite something, making a character with that haircut and that ridiculous accent a compellingly scary figure.

Also, Moon was fantastic. Very intelligent stuff. And it's amazing how good Kevin Spacey can be without even ever appearing on the screen. :adore:

On another note, I think this is the first time I'm going to be watching two movies on the same day. I only agreed to Burn After Reading because it seems quite light.

Omg snap, I got sleepy and I think I missed most of the significant speech Tommy Lee Jones gave at the end :s-smilie: LOL what can I say, sleep overcame me :frown:

I know! From behind it looked like a little girl bob! Definitely, made it an even more impressive performance

I haven't heard of that one! I'll add it to my list

Ah Kevin Spacey is brilliant! I loved him in American Beauty

I can't wait for the 20th June to come (last exam), I've already arranged a couple of movie marathons  There are so many classics (cult and otherwise) that I really feel like I'm missing out on!

Not to mention that January Jones is in it.

She's a talented actress as well.

1) Iron Man II is awesome.

2) Week early release? No...UK cinemas tomorrow!

3) Yay First Class!
Empire have given Thor a 4 star review.

Well, I don't not like the gadgets per se. I just think they distract from the story and the realism (which is key - for me, anyway :p:)However, a lot of my friends were very angry about the lack of them in Casino Royale. They justified it by saying things like: "that's Bond though, he's suave, sexy, cool, loads of gadgets, nice cars and girls!". But, for me, I'd be perfectly happy with no gadgets at all as it's the character I love. The tools he uses to accomplish his missions is fair game.

For me, a Bond film has to have; the girl, for his womanising personality; the car, because it shows his class and luxury life style; exotic locations, he's the spy everyone wants to be and we all want a bathing suit scene; the bad guy, but avoid the Dr. Evil type. Everything else is just extra. I've never read the books though but that's my opinion!

The Craig films are definitely by favourite. And I love Bourne

I definitely think they should have better villains. I liked the classic villains, but they wouldn't entirely fit in with the new Bond. And these more 'realistic' villains leave something to be desired. Bourne, for example, makes use of equally skilled assassins. Bond doesn't really have anybody.

Oh yeah, the woman, cars and locations are integral. Gadgets would perhaps add a certain degree of cheese, and when they are used to escape from the most ridiculous situation - and they happen to be the perfect solution. Aren't they adding gadgets to the next film? Wonder how that will turn out. Explosive toothpaste. :awesome:

Whedon fanbase. What are you hedging your bets on being the biggest box office take for superhero movies this year and next?

I've not watched Burn After Reading. Did consider it at one point. What did you think of True Grit?

Javier Bardem is great. Possibility of him being in the Dark Tower series and the new Bond film. :teeth:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1 DVD - 7/10, it was ok and Emma Watson looks stunning but it did miss a lot of bits out from the book which is one of the reason why I am always sceptical of book adaption films. Very long duration also. The second one will be better as that is where the real action begins and is the main part.
I wonder what Ebert will give it (Thor)... just waiting to see what score he gives to new, big releases is almost a whole tradition now, he gives out half stars / 5, you can't even do that xD

Has anyone actually watched 'Your Highness' btw

I just got one of my friends hooked on Buffy (to the extent that we're comparing top 15 episode lists xD) so my next step will be fully fledged Whedon fangirlhood.

I reckon Batman. How about you?
Batman will easily be the biggest superhero movie of next year. I don't think many people know about the Spider-Man, Avengers and Superman reboot yet, while it's pretty much common knowledge that another Batman movie is on the way.

I only recently bought TRON: Legacy on Blu Ray, and I can say that I missed out on watching it on the big screen. It was such an amazing sequel, and possibly one of the greatest live action films to come out of Disney in a long time.

Have you watched Firefly? :teeth:

Batman, most definitely, based on the success of TDK and to some extent, BB. It's the only established film franchise in there. I'm extremely curious to know (will have a look around later) whose idea it was to have the title The Dark Knight Rises.

And soundtrack. Don't forget the soundtrack.

I hear there is a sequel on the way. There was talk of a teaser trailer on the Bluray/DVD. Did you find anything interesting on the disc as an extra?

Agreed apart from the Spiderman reboot, depends on how much industry info people look up on but I think a fair amount of people know it's getting rebooted, news of Andrew garfield as the new spiderman broke a few months ago

But The Dark Knight rising will be huge anyway, cast is shaping up well

I watched most of it online and enjoyed it but I missed it when it was actually on air (cos I was like ten and preoccupied with Powerpuff Girls or whatever xD). I haven't seen any Dollhouse, it doesn't really appeal to me.
