Radioactivity help

Hi,

I have attached a question on radioactivity.
How are you supposed to know if in the question there is more radiation or if there is just one?
Also, why does alpha and beta radiation deflect in different directions (and why in those directions)?

alpha and beta particles carry electrical charges - moving charged particles are deflected in magnetic fields.
the direction in which they're deflected depends on whether they're positively charged or negatively charged.
look up the charge carried by alpha and beta particles.

Why does it depend on the charge?
Alpha is positive, beta is negative and does gamma have no charge? Is that why it is not deflected?

yep those charges are correct.

you need to have done circular motion and some magnetism & motors to get this type of question.

when you have a charge moving through a magnetic field at right angles to the field you get a force... it's the same theory that you covered in electric motors and generators and electron beams in cathode ray tubes.

The direction of the force can be determined by Fleming's left hand rule - for a positively charged particle like an alpha the particle is moving in the same direction as conventional current and for a negatively charged particle like a beta it's the opposite direction.

The path of the charged particle will be bent into a circle by the force (circular motion)
