The Broken Earth trilogy by NK Jemisin. My favourite book out of the trilogy is probably Obelisk Gate.
Another one I really liked was the Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon.

Dickens is great, I also like Jules Verne and Dumas.
I also think that War and Peace is overrated (Anna Karenina is meant to be better) and I prefer Dostoevsky.

that reminds me of Rudyard Kipling the author of jungle book, whose son died in war due to his poor eyesight (he passed the army test due to nepotism, his fathers good reputation and influence) and til this day his body has still not be found- there's a voice about it its called 'my boy jack' I would defo recommend it makes me cry every time

I just had a look at it. It says it all so matter of factly but it still has a real depth of emotion it made my cheeks go cold (btw with really emotive/touching literature my cheeks and calves sort of go cold and the hair stands up on them - I don't know why).
It seems like he is conscious that without his influence his son wouldn't have gone to war and died and he knew that could happen but didn't think it would and comes to terms with it by talking with himself. (When I was thinking this it sounded profound.)

Edit: I got a rep so it must be profound...
