(WCH11) IAL Chemistry Unit 1- 6 October 2020 (Exam Discussion)

This is my first exam, and maybe the first of many of you, being the first Chemistry paper.

Im doing all 6 units and i find that i dont have that much time in my hands right now since i just finished the spec. how many papers of each units should i finish before the exam?

You can use NH papers to get them. There are papers from 2015-2019, which should be enough for you given this limited amount of time.
And are you only taking chemistry?

Has anyone tried the new spec papers? I think this mark is decent enough.

Yes 66 raw marks is usually an A , although when i used to solve the papers id get a good mark but then in the exam i got less but atleast theres grade boundaries

I think that there will be 1 question on the ideal gas law.

Mohr’s salt, (NH4)2Fe(SO4)2.6H2O, is a blue-green crystalline solid usually made by dissolving equimolar amounts of iron(II) sulfate and ammonium sulfate in dilute sulfuric acid and then crystallising. The reaction may be represented by the equation
FeSO4.7H2O + (NH4)2SO4 (NH4)2Fe(SO4)2.6H2O + H2O

(a) What mass of Mohr’s salt would be produced from 2.78g of iron(II) sulfate with excess ammonium sulfate, if the yield in the reaction was 80%?
A 2.22g
B 2.78g
C 3.14g
D 3.92g

(b) How many cations are there in each mole of Mohr’s salt?
[Avogadro]
A 6.0 × 1023
B 1.2 × 1024
C 1.8 × 1024
D 3.0 × 1024

(c) What is the percentage by mass of water in Mohr’s salt?
A 4.6%
B 18%
C 28%
D 72%

Just divide 2.6*18 (H2O mass x2.6) from the total Mr of the salt calculated.

Yes..IAL
For unit 1 I also think there will be a question about the bond angles and at least a question about one of the mechanisms and moles... lots of moles

Sorry. Can you please type clearly? It should be 6 H2O but it is easy to misread as 2.6.

I did the Jan 2019 paper and got 66 again.
I lost 3 marks on every question in section B (a coincidence), but got the most difficult question on section A correct, which only 26% of candidates did it.

I have completed the last paper (specimen) and scored 71/80.
I have gone through my sheet once again, with the hard U1 questions. I think that I am ready.

Convert 120 dm3 to 0.12m3, and 25°C into 298K.
Then you can use pV=nRT.
