I'm guessing they had to kill him, by capturing him the US would be open to kidnappers demanding his release and it would be a bigger security risk. Imagine the collective risks of transporting Bin Laden to the US.

I think by killing him they eliminated quite a few risks. Obviously the biggest risk at the moment is they might retaliate, but I doubt it would be effective.

Edit: I woke up this morning wanting to revise my brains out, and then I turn on the TV whilst eating my cornflakes and they announce he is dead. Well, I've been glued to the TV ever since.

If we'd took him alive and put him on trial, how many innocents in the interim would have been taken hostage and beheaded in a last ditch attempt by Al Qaeda to have him freed?
So what if he's a martyr? let the wackos who follow him believe what they want.

Ok you bunch of crazy sceptical cretins here's an exert from a wiki article of his death.

"The body was recovered by the U.S. military and was in its possession.[6][8] ABC News has reported that the body has been identified by DNA testing.[6] However, Reuters reports that DNA test results will be available in the next few days and that bin Laden's body was identified using facial recognition techniques.[9]"
It's even cited!

It also says: " The SEALs stormed the compound at approximately 1am local time[16] and engaged bin Laden and his men in a firefight.[17] The raid lasted about 40 minutes. Three other male adults present at the compound were also reportedly killed in the operation, including an adult son of bin Laden.[18] Bin Laden was shot in the head.[19] The helicopter they used to breach the mansion walls suffered a mechanical breakdown and could not fly the soldiers out. The SEALs burned the helicopter to secure intelligence[11] and carried out bin Laden's body on foot.[20]" So those pics are fake.

I suggest people actually bother to read sources instead of creating silly conspiracies in their head.

People think his death will turn the tide against Al-Qaeda. As if, I'm certain Bin Laden had made detailed preparations and plans for this eventuality. The war goes on...

i agree with you, he was a western-orientated creation of propaganda, used as an excuse to blame Afghanistan for the 911 attack (so the US could invade them for OIL in 2001). The 911 attack which as a conspiracy has had many different theoretical interpretations of its cause from (US press belief), Bin Laden, being the culprit to (Channel 4 and many other critics) the US officials themselves being the cause. The truth of this is unknown, and it remains to be a conspiracy.

the irony of the matter is that, a few years channel 4 and the bbc published a couple of short documentaries (which were later deleted from the web) that the supposed Bin Laden had died in 2006?, then a few years after the media was still claiming he was still alive?, well i say the media is bull ****ting, and saturated with lies, and that THIS MAN NEVER EXISTED.
