Hey, i'm scoring a lead sheet for a taylor swift style of music for my course, can anyone explain simply to me how i know what tempo/beat to choose?

for example, my playback speed for my notation is currently half note = 140 bpm, should it be in quarter notes as standard?

Isnt it normally crotchet = 140
(i hate theory!)
