How to get A* in art?

I'm on the aqa exam board and was wandering how to get a*.
People keep telling me to show development but I don't really understand what that means. Can anyone tell me how I can show developments and does it matter if my first sketch book is really bad?

I don't do Art but I do Photography on AQA and I think the mark scheme is similar.

Development means developing the work as much as you possibly can. For example, in photography I have to edit my shoot I've taken and then do further edits and more edits. Using different techniques and methods each time to maximise it's potential.

Hope that helps a little.

EDIT// Oops just realised that this is GCSE, I thought it was A Level. Not sure if it still applies
