Why does surface area actually affect air resistance?

whats the scientist explanation I know it increases with surface area but WHY?

Tanx
Imagine air pressure on a 1m squared area = 1kg/m2. This acts against friction (or whatever) which is causing car (or whatever) to accelerate. If the surface area increases, so does the 'pressure' against the car/thing, so the resistant force of air resistance is greater.
