Yeah so I'm just wondering how you know if it fractional distillation or cracking that should be used when given the equation?

Cracking produces alkenes and alkanes

Fractional distillation of crude oil only produces alkanes

It doesn't produce alkanes, it separates them from the mixture we call crude oil (as the different fractions have different boiling points).
