Why add nitric acid after a sulfate/halide test

Just wondering why you would ever add nitric acid after you have added silver nitrate or barium chloride when normally it's first to remove other ions?

I think you can use it to dissolve the precipitate? I may be wrong, though.

I know that u can different concentrations of NH3 to the precipitate to fully confirm the halide ions
