Shoot her and yourself - then neither of you will be sad.

Don't say goodbye! Just have a really nice time together doing something, go on a little mini holiday or a little adventure or anything that you can do together that you will both remember for a long long time. Then remember to say I love you or something like that (I dont know). But don't say goodbye.

If you never see each other again, then it acts as a great goodbye memory, yet its not too sad an experience as a proper goodbye would be.

And don't worry, from the sounds of it, you're close and you definately will see each other again.

If she means a lot to you, then the noble thing to do would be to talk about the future (ie not the past) and give her encouragement for the coming year. This will also help you later on in knowing that you have acted correctly. I would definitely NOT bake her a cake!

My idea is:

Buy a nice book (empty) and fill it with photo's and things that you have done together. i.e. the wrapper of your favourtie sweetie or whatever, anything that will remind her of you. Then leave a good few pages clear at the back with a note at the top of the first blank page saying, "We'll fill these in the future."

Also, make a CD of both of your favourite songs, so that when she wants to remember you and things she can do so through sound which would also bring back memories. Make sure you include tracks that mean something too.

I'd also send her some flowers once I got to uni, after about a week or two with a simple message, maybe use one of these:

"I'll miss you lots honey, don't forget me. Let's meet up soon!"
"I'll never for get the good times we've had together and will look forward to the many more we are bound to have. Take care."

or did you two ever kiss in the beginning? If so, be sure to include Lionel Richie's "It started with a kiss .... never thought it would come to this." lol.

Does that help at all?

Buy her something she can keep and remember you by....a bracelet or necklace or something that will come in handy on her gap year...
[QUOTE='[-David-]']Im off to uni in september and recently ive been spending a lot of time with a friend ive known for about 7 years. She's going to have a gap year travelling the world and I may not see her again....

Of course we've agreed to stay in contact but if it doesn't work out, i just want to say goodbye in a way that she'll remember me.

No doubt many of you are in the same situation so, how are you saying goodbye to your best friends?

I thought you were leaving us then, so many UKL'ers are leaving :frown:
Well Im not, same here, all my mates who Ive known for 7 years are going to Uni's down south, and I will never see them again for the next 4 years or so. I havent said goodbye yet, but I will see them on Results day, so we will cry together then. You should go on holiday with them, before Septemeber, sorta like a fun trip out before you leave them. Thats what Im doing.

if you do something out of character (eg. baking a cake), that'd just be weird

odds are you will see her again - a year is nothing really, so I'd just keep in touch by email and you could even save up to go out and meet her

the book thing is a good idea. i did that for high school ( left, all my friends stayed) and all my mates wrote me really nice messages. i've used the book again (the next coloured section) for college and i'll prob try and keep it going for uni etc, i love reading it cos everyones written all the 'in-jokes' that we had (the strangest being a sheep-orgy drawn by my best mates bf + the pornographic pictures drawn by another really close friend). i just wish i'd got all my friends to sign it at my 18th as well

i've got a box that i'm taking to uni that's got my book in it and all photos of my mates and my bf etc.

Why don't you have a sort of leaving party?
yea, if you lov her as much as she lovs you, then you will definately see each other again. 7 yrs?? i wouldnt be surprised if you got married! its only one year you might not see her. i say take her for a hot air balloon ride. then she wil lov you. please tel me what you decide, cos i lov the same guy for 7 yrs at school an now i might never see him again ;....( cos he's goin to uni and im goin APU. i just left it as if it wasnt the last time i'd see him, cos sayn goodbye is too hard an i didnt wanto cry. i say buy her a mobile, lots of international calling cards and make sure you are speed dial one!

i really feel for you mate. its a tough one ;....(

by the way, you do sound like you still fancy her. an advantage of never seeing her for a long time is you can ask her out or ask her for marry and by the next time u see her she'll forget about it if she says no!

Well i dont think we "love" eachother though, we're just good friends. I may have those kind of feelings for her but ive learned to hold them in for the years, just had the feeling of "im not good enough" etc etc etc..

Well after the year out im not sure what she'll be doing, she might migrate somewhere, she might come back to the uk, dont know. I would feel a lot better if i knew she would be coming back to the UK after her gap year.

If after my 4 years of uni we're still in contact then i might go for it.

Letters are always good. Writing down all the good stuff from the past, and what you hope for them in the future.

Giftwise; it's good to get something that 'lasts' - as, unlike cakes ect, they can keep hold of it. (I'm not saying that the idea of a cake is bad though...just not something I'd get for someone).

When one of my friends left, she took 5 of us out for a meal, and we took loads of photo's. It was fun, and the photo's can be duplicated and given out ect.

Best of luck in finding something
