Chem Mod2 AQA question URGENT!
Hi everyone...am revising for my resit for CHM2...i seem to have forgotten how to do oxidation states...
Can anyone explain why the formula for Copper(II)Carbonate is CuCO3 and not CuCO2
i work these out like this:
Charge on Cu = 2+ and charge on carbonate= -1
so
(2x z) = (1x y)
z = 1 y = 2
i knwo am wrong..where am i wrong?

Simple, the charge on carbonate (CO3) is 2- not 1-.
Its all to do with structure - google it and you'll see what I mean!
