How much are you expected to know for internships/ grad schemes?

This is for engineering particularly since you are required to have an engineering degree.For example, if I apply for an automotive role am I expected to have completed modules related to that or is it more of applying what you've learnt even though it's not directly related?

I have an interview for a placement and although I understand everything I'm doing in uni I don't think I would know what and where to begin. I'm thinking of waiting until next year for a placement instead

It won't be long before 90%+ of your working knowledge is stuff you learnt on the job. Soft skills and engineering judgement are far more important than detailed technical knowledge for undergrads/grads.
