all of the aussies i've known over here (a fair bunch of exchange students) love brits, and love britain in general. although considering the fact that they chose to come here, that should be fairly obvious. ah well. sadly, most british expats in australia actually are "whinging poms" (from my experience, at least).

wheeee, sweeping generalisations again! Of course, the statement probably has some merit, but there's a very big difference between 'some' and 'everyone'.

For the record, I'm Australian, lived there for about 9 years before moving to Hong Kong and China.
Advance Australia..Fair? What?

I've visited Australia for a month, and spoken to ones who have been living in the UK, and I've found a lot of them to be quite unpleasant. They seem very ignorant and brash, and are constantly trying to make condescending jokes about people, and pretty much insult you. They hide behind an excuse, and refer to excessive insults as "Aussie" humour, but really I get the impression a lot are just a load of arrogant ***** with a chip on their shoulder.

When I visited Australia, while for the most part is was fine (didn't have to speak to many Australians), I found quite a few had this thing about calling British (specifically English people) whinging poms, pretty much unprovoked. They seem to have this idea in their mind that they're so much tougher than everyone else, so much smarter than everyone else, that Australia is the dogs ******** and everywhere else is inferior. I think there is some real animosity there towards the English from quite a few Australians, and a lot of their "humour" towards the English goes beyond the conventions of leg pulling. Their statements of "pommie bastard" seem somewhat similar to an English person shouting "Paki" at a person of Middle Eastern appearance in a British street - of course, guess which one would be taken most seriously. :P

Though I guess you gotta feel sorry for them really, they clearly have serious confidence issues compared to the big countries with an ounce of significance. Who really gives a **** about Australia, it has nothing, just desert and a load of housing estates.

And I've found many agree with me. I was speaking to someone the other day, and he is the most socialist, politically correct, Labour voting, Gaudian reading, equal opportunities, etc, etc, person you're ever likely to meet (not that there's anything wrong with that), and even he agreed he found Australians quite rude and largely uneducated.

Rant over *flame shield on*.

lol, think we just have to look at your post to see the definition of the term "whinging pom"

Hey, don't judge all Australians on a few drongos you encountered on your travels.

Yeah I agree! Of course there are bogans here, I had to grow up with them :s-smilie:

However at the same time you can get them ALL over the world, including the UK - I believe they are referred to as chavs

Came across a few when I was over in London last year, and was even verbally abused simply because I would not part with (the very little amount of) change I had at the time.

Wow don't I feel special. Would you like to make sweeping generalisations about every country now? All Americans are fat and stupid. All British are either posh and inbred, or teenage parent chavs. Somehow I don't think most people would let you get away with saying that.

Strangely I'd say the 'animosity' that you say Australians have towards British is not, amazingly, because they're jealous of Britian, but because ultimately Britain has complete power over Australia. I think you can forgive people for being a bit bitter.

Oh and I've lived in England for 11 years btw, so you can't say I'm just one of these crass ranting Australians you have met.

Complete power over Australia? Where did you get that from? If you're referring to our common Crown then don't, because you have a Governor-General who makes decisions FOR the Queen. The only power we have over our beloved Aussie land is borne of a sense of history. When Oz entered WWII it was because the Prime Minister felt our DoW was a default DoW by Australia as well. Now you have the Oz Labour Party in power you can be sure that that appreciation of our historical relations will be put into "much needed redress", as one of your ministers said about monarchy is Australia.

I don't mean to condescend, but criticising about sweeping statements and then using one in your defence is hardly the basis of a sound argument is it. Plus, I study history and I make a point of getting to know the whole story. When people just guess it voids what I do.

I'm not a fan of a significant proportion of the British population!

Good for you.

Well said. A welcome qualification for the argument proposing Aussie bashing.

The australians i know are lovely, when I was there they were very friendly. And they were great supply teachers, let us get away with murder.

Lol, ironic much?! :p:
Their celebs are awful.
Oh come on, you all liked Holly Valance

Whoa, a lot of opinionated people in here, and a bunch of sweeping generalisations. I find it fine (I live in Sydney in a fairly affluent region) and I am originally from Britain and am of Indian descent. Australia is a great place, although like everywhere else on the planet has good and bad places.

Sorry to hear many of you have had bad experiences, however im sure there are many more people with positive experiences.

And for those who are talking about Aussies being ex crims - the joke is a little old (200+ years in fact)
Man I'm going to uni in Australia...oh NOOOO! :frown: :frown: :frown:

You have our sympathies.
We hope that it is in a major city, otherwise we hear that the "bogans" will get you.

Edit:
You are going to Canberra , the suicide capital of Australia, with a tiny population of just 300,000 ?
Oh dear....

When I was there in the Summer, everyone seemed quite friendly and nice! I went to Perth, Fremantle, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Uluru, Hamilton Island and Airlie Beach, and everyone I met seemed really friendly...I didn't get anything about being a 'pom'. The worst was someone cracking up when I was first given change in a shop and sort of exclaimed "oooh! I looks like our 50p, it's got the queen's face on it and everything!" to my sister...but yeah that's sort of understandable I guess...

EDIT: and there's a completely CRAZY australian maths teacher at my school - she sings songs all the time and is amazingly ditzy but she's really nice too  IMO there are more horrible British People than there are Australians

Just remind them that they're all convicts.

Yeah, we are all convicts:rolleyes:

Sweeping generalisation made, like any country the UK included I'm sure it depends on the people, their backgrounds, social economic status, their opinions, how they were raised, how you treat them etc etc.

Basically you can't condemn an entire country for the actions/opinions of a vocal few that you would of meet. Good and bad people like every country.

Well what do you expect from convicts...
Why would anyone want to go to Aus/NZ?

Aussies don't seem to realise they're just the crims that were shipped out of Britain!

Not true.
Well, not in my case. I live in South Australia, a state which was established for free settlers.

There are MANY xenophobic Australians. It bothers me since everyone here is technically 'foreign'. You get the Europeans who came out here after the war (yes, they've been here 50 years and some still haven't bothered to learn English) going on about how Asians shouldn't be allowed to make Australia home.

Some people are so 'affraid' to broaden their cultural knoweldge. A lot of young Aussies don't want to travel. This is why these people think hokkien noodles and fried rice are 'exotic'.

I wouldn't say Aussies rude though. All the exchange students at uni love it here and say everyone has been really nice to them. Yes, there are some rude idiots, but you get that everywhere.

There are two major groups in Australia; Bogans and non-bogans. Stay away from the bogans and you should be fine

So OP, if you don't like Australia, don't come back. There you go. Problem solved
