Why did the dog bite me

I went to my boyfriends house to watch the World Cup today and as I was cheering as the 3rd goal went in, his dog started barking around me . Next thing I know he’s bitten me on my lower leg and I have a cut there . I was stroking him for the last hour before the game started and he was fine then when I started cheering cos the goal went in he suddenly went and bit me .

Any idea why he bit me ? Apparently I’ve been told it’s because the dog thought I was about to beat it up or something when I started shouting when I never would do that in a million years even when it bit me . Are dogs really that stupid that they can’t tell the difference between excitied shouting to angry shouting ?

I’ve never had a fear of dogs before this but after this I don’t think I will go back to my boyfriends for a while because I’m scared and shaken up now . I just want to know why so I can prevent another dog from biting me again in the future
You scared him, that's all. You moved suddenly and it spooked him and he's defending himself against any potential threat.

He's not stupid at all, it's a survival mechanism.

Who knows if the dog that bit you had been beaten up before causing it to be afraid of human 'aggression?'

A well socialised dog will not usually bite other dogs or humans unless it is attacked and fears for its life

A nervous dog, a brutalised dog, an unsocialised dog without good leadership (from humans) or the pack will automatically react to any kind of threat with nervous aggression (in its eyes prevention is better than cure)

Your overexcited shouting and flailing will have immediately put the dog on full alert and frightened it. Dogs are dogs, they are not human.

I asked my boyfriend that after and he admitted that his grandparents would beat the dog sometimes if he misbehaved such as kicking him and that day he bit me after the game , the dog got another beating and slapping as well for what it did to me . That probably explains why and even without biting every time I come in , he (the dog) aggressively barks at me right in my face until he gets told to shut up by his owner and my boyfriend’s grandad.

Well, there's your answer, it's a house full of violent jerks & the dog is just fitting in.
Sympathies to the dog.
Poor dog.

Violent to the dog, not to me. They've been alright with me so far and with my boyfriend. Though, my boyfriend's mum is violent - she was abusive to him and those grandparents are from his mum's side. So your right, apple doesn't fall far from the tree

Dogs can sometimes react unexpectedly, and it's hard to know why. Taking some time to regroup and regain your confidence around dogs is totally understandable. Remember, not all dogs are the same, and incidents like this are rare. Take care!
