Guinea pig or hamster?

Can anyone advise me a little on hamsters vs Guinea pigs?

Background: I have had three winter white hamsters in the past (dwarf species.) I honestly loved them and couldn’t fault them. They were the greatest little pets and were wonderful with my niece and nephew.

Prior to this I always wanted a robo but didn’t think they would be good with the children.

I had a Syrian but he was not a successful pet for us. He was always so timid and terrified - he hated the children and didn’t take to the adults in the house also. The only person he would vaguely tolerate was my mum but handling was totally out of the question. He always seemed so stressed and terrified. I know this is not typical though.

I have always wanted a guinea pig but I work nights sometimes 12 hour shifts so sometimes I can be out of the house at worst for 16 hours. I don’t know if this is a bit of a no-no.

I am often anxious so a pet that can support with that would be great. I am often anxious at night too.
