Couple interesting maths problems

1) A rail track is 1 mile long (5280 feet). One day a joker lays a an extra 1 foot of track in the middle (don't ask how) and the track is now an arc of length 5281 feet. What is the maximum height from the ground to the track. *Calculator needed*

2) 3^x = 1000000

Oh right, suppose he probably does mean something like that (not that he said anything like that, and his hint could've been a bit more explicit...) otherwise it is ridiculous not to just take logs
