do i need to know about expansion of octet for aqa a levels in covalent bond.

Understanding why it happens with certain elements on period 3 and below is not required.

Knowing how to predict the shapes of molecules with expanded octets (i.e SF6, PCl5) is required.

so do you mean the shape of molecules and the angles. also I can't find anything about the expansion of the octets in the speciation.
is it fine for me not to know anthing about octet.

Pretty much.

The octet rule is really just a general rule of thumb and you can get away with not knowing about it at A level as it was more of a GCSE thing.
