Bomb calorimetry is used to measure gross energy when food, wood, fossil fuels and other organic substances are combusted. The process involves combusting a sample under stable conditions of temperature and measuring energy from the resultant change in temperature. However, this method cannot be used to measure gross primary energy production in biology. Gross primary energy production quantifies the chemical energy captured during photosynthesis, while bomb calorimetry measures the energy content of organic matter produced.
