i prefer to go to a crap uni with a crap social life.

I have been to both Cambridge & LSE which is why I can make an objective judgment. Although I would refrain from calling Cambridge a social wasteland, it is far from being one of the most socially vibrant unis in the country, but of course this is with good reason. LSE however has two distinct social networks, the independent school network and the citywide University of London social organisation. I personally know peoele who go to LSE but spend more time engaging in intercollegiate activities than the actual LSE events, which is not to say that the LSE social network isnt varied or entertaining, but the UoL network encompasses all the member unis so involves far greater access to facilities and resources than available at any individual uni in the country. Which is why I say the social life on offer at LSE is better than at Oxbridge.

Maybe I'm just being completely dense but I still don't understand the logic here. You're arguing that there are two social networks, one of which is considerably bigger. Oxford and Cambridge are no different. There's the collegiate social network (as in, within one college) and the intercollegiate/uni-wide networks. Not to mention (in Oxford's case) networks like the Oxford Union network, etc

Plus there's the Oxbridge (Oxford-Cambridge, or varsity) network too :yep:

since when was durham renowned for its social life??? Isn't it supposed to be one of the most boring unis?

I would prefer what I'm getting, which is a degree from Oxbridge with a social life, thank you very much. :yep:

:ditto: :five: :yeah:

I love integrating the social life into the academic stuff. I had a tutorial on a punt on Friday :yep:

There are no boring universities, just boring people.
I think I'd go for the social life rather than Oxbridge anyway. Personally I think the stress at those two would prevent me having a good time as I'm not good at heavy workloads.
If you can hack it though, you can definately still have a good social life - there are people up for fun at Oxbridge.

Having a good social life and uni experience is quite integral to the whole thing though, I've learnt more from those aspects of studying than my course alone I'd say.

You always hear of people struggling to find time to sleep/eat or have fun in Oxbridge which sounds a little alarming :s-smilie:

It's not for everyone, that's for sure. But many of us do manage to maintain a healthy balance. :yep:

You're kidding right? Oxbridge graduates are some of the wildest of all! Ever heard of the Bullingdon Club?
I love how people are like "OXBRIDGE DOES HAVE A SOCIAL LIFE" when the OP wasn't actually inferring that people at Oxbridge DON'T have a social life the op was asking a merely hypothetical question

Having a social life is overrated. But then again, so is 'Oxbridge'.

The implication with such questions almost always is that Oxbridge students don't have a social life and I felt the same applied in this case

Lol that's so stupid  I think people who say people at Oxbridge don't have a social life are a bit jealous they can't go there themselves tbh

I don't really know why people think that. It is pretty stupid though. It's one of these things where if people knew the average Oxford student, they wouldn't think that at all :p:

Haha I believe you! Still you do need to be pretty hardcore to cope. I definately wouldn't have the patience!

You cant say the social life at Oxbridge is better than at LSE because firstly LSE is in London which means far greater social opportunity than anywhere else in the country, also LSE is part of the UoL so shares social events/facilities with the other member unis.

Having been to both uni's I can assure you that Oxford has a far better social life.

Student life in London requires a lot more effort to socialise, everything is so far apart, lots of people disappear after class to god know's where. It is an isolating place, even though I made lots of effort to socialise at LSE and at other London Colleges.

Its obviously easier to socialise at more campusy uni's, and although people are split into colleges those form quite strong social units and are far closer together than things are in London. Oxford also has far more active university societies with tons of black tie events, wine fueled parties, dinners and balls.

Oxbridge degree, because you can have a social life.
i suppose it depends by what u define as "social life" isnt that basically socialising with people who have the same interests as you? what if those interests happen to be academic, or just more artsy related than clubbing.

i mean im happy 2 sit around drinking, talking etc. but i cant be doing with shouting over some repetitive ***** music, that doesnt say socialising to me.
