Edge gym

So how's this place for the dedicated lifter? I never got a chance to check it out on the Open Day, and from what I can see online it seems full of cardio equipment.

How's it for free weights, benches, squat racks, barbells, machines etc? Is there enough equipment that you're not waiting around? I'll probably be hitting this place up at least 5 days a week so if anyone knows much about it that'd be great
Hi

I'm sure there are students on here who can give you there opinion, but another TSR member has just PM'd me asking the same thing!

In short, yes - there's definitely lots for the 'dedicated lifter'! The weights area is situated within the main fitness suite, but it's kind of hidden towards the back (if you took a tour on an open day, you might not have been walked around the whole fitness suite as it's quite big!).

The Fitness suite is a L-shape and if you imagine the short bottom bit of the L, that's entirely weights. There's a little bit of info on the weights section here: http://sport.leeds.ac.uk/page.asp?se...=Fitness+Suite In addition to free weights we have a large number of Technogym Pure Strength Equipment (http://www.technogym.com/gb/products...strength/10593)

If you go to http://sport.leeds.ac.uk/virtual-tour/ and select "Fitness Suite Weights" you'll be able to see some of the equipment we have. I'm sure we have more weights machines than this now, the virtual tour was done not long after the gym opened and they've had even more cardio and weights equipment put in since then!

I hope that's useful!

It can get a little busy at times (especially Wednesday afternoons!). Time your workouts around this and it shouldn't be a problem. There's also a special weights section for members of Gryphons societies, I think (I should really use this but I've never found the time to get an induction).

To be honest there are bigger and more functional gyms about, but you can't beat it for convenience, and it's got a good atmosphere in general. The staff are also pretty friendly too, which is also a bonus. Whatever the case I've stayed there for the past 3 years, and have no intention of changing.

You may also get a free membership if you're in halls, although I'm not sure if they still do this.

Summary: I like it. But make sure you know what times to avoid.

Yup, still get "Edge Club" membership (off peak usage of fitness suite and swimming pool, anytime use of anything else)
It can get busy, but I really like it as a gym. I usually go at 8 in the morning to avoid the busy times, and can usually do what I want with no interruption - but that takes dedication, especially as a first year!
