Uni App Didn't Go Well, Think I Needed to do some Research before Applying :(

The UCAS website says that "You cannot normally change your choice of university or college after we have received your form unless there are exceptional circumstances (personal problems etc)". Seems like your only option would be clearing- this page explains it http://www.ucas.com/getting/clearing/index.html in which case you'd decline the 3 offers you have and just wait and see what courses are available in August.

RHUL is certainly a class above the other two. Avoid Kingston at all costs.

Hi,

My UCAS application did not go aswell as planned, when I chose the six Uni's I thought I had to fill all six options there and then - and also didn't even think/realise I could apply to a different course at the same Uni, duh! I feel like such a dumbass. Then, I had three which I was really interested in and felt at least one would give me an offer - heh just my luck, all rejections.

At AS, I took: (re-took a module in each where I got a B in Jan04 so may improve)

A - ICT
B - Maths
B - Accounts
B - Business

Im taking Maths, ICT and Business to A2, I wanted to do Accounts but it meant travelling a stupidly long distance.

Im predicted the same as what I got at AS, so ABB - and with that I thought one of the three I wanted would offer me a place, which were:

1) A&F at Warwick
2) A&F at LSE
3) Business Management at Kings

But they all told me to bike it, straight rejections :frown:

So now im left with the Uni's I chose simply to complete the six options so I did a ip-dip-do and got these (I honestly thought and was lead to believe I had fill all six at one time)

4) Accounting Management at RHUL
5) A&F at Kingston
6) A&F at Norwich/Anglia P.

Now that I have done my research, I really would like to try something anything Business related at a half respected Uni eg UCL but now that I've chosen my six and all have replied do I have to accept an offer or can I apply once I have recieved my grades in August? And does this ever happen, or are my grades just not good enough?

After having feedback from Uni's they've all said subjects such as History or a language etc would have been better, but my career's advisor told me to get into a Business related course at a top Uni I need to have A level's specific to it - what aload of bs I know that is now! Which makes me think my grades aren't traditional enough??

This is even more a kick in the teeth as at GCSE, I had, A*'s in Maths, English, History and German and would of taken those at A2!

If I had to pick, i'd choose RHUL now, but would it be at all possible and I'd stand a chance applying for Eco or something at a different Uni after my results?

But with his grades he may even be able to get the course and uni that he wants through clearing.

Hey, your grades are really good.......the problem is....even if u apply to the same University but different course. It's very likely you would get rejected....'cause you apply to Uni' with very competitive courses.

I think u proberly should of done computing and economics instead of ICT and business, since computing and economics are more traditional and more respected. Tho, its always good to do subjects you enjoy, rather then doing them for the sake of it.

I would avoid Kingston, since your grades would be well above average for that course. Also i think that RH is more specialise towards Arty subjects, so my advise would be to choose UEA.

the other option is to reapply next year, but that is kinda risky, 'cause u may get rejected from the same uni' u apply to this year

If you mean applying to the same uni with 2 different course choices in the same application, someone told me this might not always be a good idea because it might appear to them as though you are indecisive (esp if the courses are not in the least bit similar)... but then again, i'm not an admissions tutor so I wouldn't know what they'd be thinking for sure.

Is that UEA or Anglia Polytechnic? Cos i would definately recommend UEA but not Anglia Polytechnic.

UCAS have also started something called UCAS Extra. Basically if you decline or get rejections from all 6 of your choices you can pick another Uni before clearing takes place- but even then theres no guarantee you will get it. Its worth a shot though. if I was you i would take a gap year and reapply after your A level results- then you will also have the benefit of getting unconditional offers as you will already have your results- and you could get a job in the area you want to study- good luck!

Gap year is something I really do not want to do and I think clearing would be to risky as I reckon I will highly likely end up with somewhere worse than RHUL, so I think I will just accept RHUL. Not much choice really :frown:

IM ON MY GAP YEAR ID RECCOMEND it as when u think about you've studied for ur life really so far, n why dont u, take a year off n enjoy yourself rather than sloggin and reapply next year, it will give u a break plus it not even a year its sumink like 9 months?

Take a Gap yr and ReApply next yr.
If u work harder u can get AAB or AAA. Its not too late yet! And apply to the top unis again and see if u get in or not.also work on ur personal statement and other extra activities...

the problem is A2s are harder than AS, and if you had to do a bunch of retakes to get an A in the AS, will you get the desired A grades on the first go for A2?

It's not unheard of, it's called 'shopping around' if you happen to do better at A level than you think you would. However before doing this you have to decline your offer on results day, which is risky because universities don't have to accept you if you ring them up. People at my school did it, 1 got accepted and 3 didn't I think.

The only subject I wanted a A in at AS was Math's, I was late to the M1 module exam in June03 and could only finish half (was surprised they even let me in) So to get that A I needed to re-take that one module. Hardly a 'bunch' - and quite alot of people I know who have a A in Maths have had to re-take a module here or there.

The other re-takes, I just threw in as I thought why not, I got a B, why not go for a A in Business?

I know what you mean, but if I didn't have problems on the M1 exam day I feel I would have my A grade now.

On a serious note, you should reapply esp if you get AAB, altho unfortunatley havin ICT rather than Computing and business rather than say econmics or something is kinda annoying, these unis prefer traditional subjects, your careers advisor person was talking nonsense.
About the uni's you've applied for: well althoug LSE asks for ABB, they tend to take in LOADS of international students (for the fees), which sucks, and most of the people applying have like 4As, which also sucks. Kings and Warwick are good choices, although warwick can be a bit iffy in its decisions. If I were you I would certainly reapply to kings and warwick at leats tho. If you think you can do it get that AAB. Your course is quite oversubscribed and many of the applicants will have AAA+ for it, with tradit subjects. btw do you hae or could get some really good work experience? It could tip the balance in your favour

I've heard it happening with the middle tier unis but never at the top because they are over subscribed as it is and have probably already rejected some straight A candidates.
You could try contacting a few unis to see if they will take you outside ucas. i've heard of it happening but only in exceptional circumstances. If you try Leeds and the like (20 to 30 ish in the league tables) and they wont consider you then I dont think you have a chance with Warwick seeing as they have already rejected you.

I dont think that RHUL is a bad choice its pretty competitive both for your subject and overall, but you are the one that has to be living there for 3 years and have a degree from there for the rest of your life so its really something you need to think about.

Careers advisors at school are notoriously bad. Mine talked me out of doing law as a first degree and what am I doing 6 years later - you guessed it a conversion in law. If i had had confidence in my instincts and not in that petty cow (not that I'm bitter) I could already be earning a decent salary and probably be about 10 grand less in debt. Dont set too much faith in peoples advice when it comes down to it its your life and you have to make yourself happy.

If you do have a year out well I would certainly do something with it. Either get some really good work exp which you will need to sort out now, or travel , perhaps do a tefal and teach abroad or get involved in some sort of volunteer project. Top unis will rarely consider you after a gap year if you havent done anything useful with it. I dossed around all year wont go down too well.

i've read ur post...yea it's harsh for those 3 unis to reject u but i'm bit surprised that u didn't apply to other good unis like...manchester or exeter sth like that coz i think u should be admitted to a great uni anyway...although i'm not saying RH is not good....
i'm not sure it's right but i think the main reason why the 3 top unis did not give offers could be due to the fact that they prefer students applying for this competitive course to study more 'academic subjects'....one can argue that this requirement can be good or bad.
if i were u, i would accept RH first then work v.hard for the A2 this yr and if the results in summer is fantastic, i'm not sure whether u can do that but u can then consider to reapply to some better unis, like those i've mentioned above. u don't have to force urself to take a gap year if u don't want to.
btw, i'm still waiting for LSE and really don't know whether i could get in coz i think i'm not that good ! going up to warwick on wed, hope the open day will be great.

well if you really dont want to go to these places and feel you could do better applying to diff unis (job prospects etc) then reject all the offers and go through clearing.. if that turns up nothing then take a gap year and do work exp etc... you might be happier in the end and more satisfied that you did yourself justice rather than put up with stuff because of one bad decision

hey, just to say I think it might be worth you contacting the unis you got rejected from. I'm not sure if it's too late now, but it you ring admissions and ask to speak to the department of another course you want to take you could ask them to reconsider your application for a new course. I did a similar thing and told the uni they were my first choice etc and offered to write a new statement to supplement my application. I got an offer for a course without the extra statement, even though it was entirely different to the one i applied to!! It may be at least worth a try rather than just takin a year out or risking clearing...though i sorted mine out in january so it may be different..

If I wait till next week, and receive my result's from Jan04 exams I am considering contacting a few Uni's to give them my new and certainly improved grades and see what they say and if there's anything they can do. At the moment I feel I could do better than where im heading but having not much option in changing it.

how did it go? as in your jan 04 exams? have you called up the uni? i would have thought that maths is quite a traditional subject. i did maths/business/psychology/english and got an offer from warwick
