If I were a non-root user, yes.

As a root user... I have no clue.

Both phones will root I reckon.

However, the S2 has an unlocked bootloader, whereas the Sensation does not.

It's an old phone.

...ergo it will never get 2.3?

There are already some 2.3-based custom ROMs (with and without Sense) for the Desire on xda-developers.

The Sensation doesn't have an unlocked bootloader? Where did you read this? Granted I'm not really keeping up with or worried about it because I'm on ATT... but still... I'm personally apart of the group that sent their week old Atrix back because of this.

Newer HTC phones are all like this it seems (Incredible S has for sure). Reason I went for the Optimus 2X over the Atrix was for the same reason.

Oh wow. HTC though? Really? Things are really going down hill here for us over at XDA :/ I can see why they don't want people going in and hacking the phones, however if they just made them that good from the beginning, I don't think we would have to go through all of this trouble

Meh, I like rooted functionality; if people didn't use it to steal games from the marketplace I don't think it would be that frowned upon either. Well that and the whole unofficial tethering thing. I honestly love it. If it weren't for "greedy" carriers and money hungry companies, we wouldn't have half of these problems. Rooting and hacking the phone doesn't give you "infinite" minutes or data, it doesn't alter anything that the carriers are doing at all aside from give us tethering functionality.

Yeah, it's odd that HTC have gone down that route. Still, on the upside, SE are doing unlockable loaders, Moto have said theirs will be open too in the future - not all doom and gloom.

Tethering is useful, as is shootme and being able to remove carrier bloatware. That's all we want root for really.
any of you guys got the HTC desire Z?

Yea... and Samsung released the GS2 with an unlocked one  But yea... well root is needed if you want to instal a custom ROM or kernel or something...which is where the real fun AND benefits lie. Other phones like the Atrix that have a locked bootloader are still able to be rooted;... so you have the freedom in that sense... however they still aren't allowed custom kernels.

Why do manufacturers want to prevent root / custom kernels? I specifically looked to see which phones could be rooted before choosing which to buy.

Which sucks major arse.

To stop you gaining an advantage ie free tethering. Granted, it's much more of a USA thing that, but it's one reason. Also it'll stop you removing their bloatware (though you only need root for both of those).

Well generally, they don't want root access. Root access allows you to actually look into the "root" of the folder, somewhat similar to being able to look into the C drive on the computer. They want you to be restricted to the "my documents" folder, if that makes any sense.

Root access allows things like sideloading (which ATT and I think another doesn't allow) which can lead to people downloading cracked apps (which isn't always the case if you go to XDA). You can also tether without the required plan. Of course, we don't all do this but it is a nice add on.

Aside from that, there are other applications that require root, such as setcpu which gives you complete control over the CPU speeds, allowing you to limit it to conceive battery life and things like that. You also can use applications like Titanium backup, which allows you to create replica backups of applications and their data, which is amazing for games and other programs.

Now with root you have access to things like ROMs and kernels. Roms in a sense would be the.... version of windows per say. For instance, the Samsung Galaxy phones over here in the states shipped with 2.1 and just now got 2.2. If you rooted the phone, you could install a custom rom with an actual version of 2.2 WITH an underlying kernel that allowed for overclocking and things of that nature.

The ROM was the update or shell with 2.1/2.2/2.3(eg, Cryogenmod) and the kernel is the underlying framework that controls how the phone is run. If you get the right programs and some common knowledge, you can swap between ROMs and kernels with relative ease giving you amazing control over your device.

So that's it in a nutshell, it basically gives you so much more control over the device. The whole... I guess rationale behind doing all of this is that generally (and pretty much everyone who does this can back me up on this one) the ROMs and kernels created by people (a TON over at XDA) are amazingly better than what the companies are giving us. There are major ones like Cryogen Mod that gives 2.3 functionality and a TON of features to tens of phones.... it really opens things up.

If you're interested or have any more questions or are looking for some guidance, drop me a PM, I'd be happy to help  I've been using ROMs and everything for about 7 months now so I can help out if you need it.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I've actually been using custom ROMs since I got my phone about half a year ago as well, but just didn't know why they wanted to prevent people from doing so.

This phone is amazing, no lag whatsoever and even on stock its so functional. Touchwiz 4 isn't even that bad anymore...I think the only problem is I might get a bit bored if there isn't anything to fix :p:
