alleles are different versions of a gene. So for eye colour you inherit one allele from your mum and one allele from your dad. The dominant allele (i.e. brown) will over power a recessive allele (i.e. blue). So if you have blue eyes you have 2 recessive alleles (that's put very simply)

Yup, as Scotty Bear said: alleles are different versions of a particular gene.

Each gene codes for the production of a particular protein. Different alleles of that gene will produce different versions of that protein (or a different protein with a similar yet different function).

Each allele or allelomorph is a counterpart of the gene (it's allele frequency and not gene frequency, :smile:

) it shares a locus with. There may be multiple alleles to a single gene. An allele/gene pair controls the net expression of any particular trait. An allele may be dominant or co-dominant or even over-dominant w.r.t the other counterpart.
