Liverpool send theirs out in December I think and Nottingham send you a questionnaire when you've sent your application off about some of your placements and also asking other things you've done to get certain skills. I applied to Bristol last year and I didn't get a work experience form so I don't know what happens with them!

Just checked Bristol's website and you fill out a work experience form from their website if you're invited to interview

I just called Nottingham to check and it says we won't get the questionnaire for another few weeks because it takes them a while to get through all the applicants. I called the RVC earlier and the lady said to go on their website and fill in the work experience form before the 15th. Edinburgh send you an email with the details

They send theirs after the application deadline to everybody meeting the entry criteria (i.e predicted grades).

Has anyone got any suggestions for what is good to put down for the 5th option? Is bioveterinary science any good? What about veterinary physiotherapy?

Bioveterinary is a very popular choice as a fifth option. The RVC have also brought out a few courses that are new this year (there's one in Agriculture for example) that might be worth looking into. Personally I'm not going to put down a fifth, If I'm rejected then I'd like to reapply.

I've put down animal behaviour and welfare science at bristol - if i get an offer, i dont think i will take it (if no offers for vet med) and will take a gap year, but i have nothing to lose and ive put it down incase i change my mind

It's entirely up to you whether you use it - it's a good idea, though. It's important to pick a course you're genuinely interested in, so it's worth doing a little bit of research rather than have it as an afterthought.
I don't think I'll actually accept an offer from my 5th choice if I get rejected, but I'm putting one down anyway, just because my feelings might change completely a year from now. I'm putting down Biology with a Year in Europe

Definitely a good idea to say you're interested in a specific field as I was encouraged to add that to mine
I didn't get into veterinary medicine in 2013 because i slipped the chemistry grade by 1 UMS point, (got AAAB in my A-Levels overall). So i decided to go and study Bioveterinary science at Liverpool. When I initially got there I was told that if we got a very high grade in our first year exams (1st or above) we could transfer onto the Vet Science course. Unfortunately mid way through the year they changed their minds about this and most of my year group was obviously left disappointed. In my honest opinion it is not worth going onto the Bioveterinary course. I think it is much more beneficial to take a year out and get as much work experience as possible/resit your grades if you miss them (hopefully you won't)
I have spoken to most of the units as well and if you end up taking the start of a degree and drop out mid way through this limits you further if you're applying again like I am because Nottingham will not except any students who have started a degree and then dropped out and I know a few other unis aren't overwhelmingly keen on this either...

Is anyone else really struggling to write their personal statement for veterinary... Does anyone have any tips? What not to include, what to include? HELP
How much have you spoken about your work experience? Should you talk about some that you have lined up?
In addition has anybody managed to get work experience at an abattoir?

Hi guys! I thought I might as well join the thread. I'm applying to Glasgow, the RVC and Nottingham, and then to Exeter and Durham (Trevelyan) for English Lit. In my veterinary statement, I've got about 55% focused on work experience, 20% academic, 20% extra-curricular and 5% introduction. Make sure that the statement reflects you, that's the most important bit. Make it personal, talk in a tone that's similar to how you would speak. You've got to make yourself memorable through your words.
I've not talked about work experience I have lined up - waste of space and it may be on the experience questionnaires anyway. I've listed my placements, talked a little about some interesting cases and what I've learned - you have to use your experience, again, to make yourself stand out. Did you see an interesting procedure ie. radiology, endoscopy?
No work experience at an abattoir, unfortunately - I'm a country kid with no possible way of getting to and from a commercial abattoir by myself.

I've just about finished my PS now, but I can empathise as it has been a struggle! Skatealexia has written an awesome article about veterinary statements that's stickied at the top of the veterinary forum, I recommend you give that a read if you haven't already. Also, some of the lovely vet students on here very kindly offer to read people's statements and offer suggestions. They're back at vet school now and the service is popular so you might have to be prepared to wait for a bit, but the address to send them to is [email protected] . The deadline for that is the 12th of October, but as I said they're busy people so it's probably better to send sooner rather than later. There's also a Facebook group for 2015 applicants. I've been in it for about a year now and it's really great for asking questions. If you're interested drop me a PM and I'll send you the link.
My statement is five paragraphs long, and two of those (which also happen to be the biggest two, making up about 50% of the total piece) are about wex. It's one of the most important parts of an application (everyone will have got the grades, so wex is what sets you apart from other people!), so it should make up a substantial proportion of your statement and it's worthwhile going into a fair bit of detail. I briefly touched on a placement that I have booked, however it's not absolutely necessary.
Unfortunately I haven't managed to get to an abattoir yet. I live in London and we don't have many of those round here! I'm still trying though

Threads move up and down the forum each time a new post is made, but important topics can be made sticky so that they're always on the front page.
