Apparently this is not as uncommon as most people think for a smaller leopard to kill a much bigger tiger, it seems many fights have taken place for rulers of india and the leopard was always reported to have won:

At one end of the preserve, on the river bank, large expanses of land were enclosed by bamboo fences or iron railings for wild animal combat. These were exactly opposite Shah Manzil on the other side of the river, which is very narrow at this spot. The King, his guests and his companions would sit in the shade of elaborate marquees decorated with gold and silver thread on the upper terrace of Shah Manzil. In ease and comfort they watched the uproar and confusion of combat across the river.

It was easy enough to make beasts of prey and rutting elephants fight each other but it was a very difficult matter to control these fights. If a rutting elephant or a tiger escaped from a cage all was confusion and many lives could be lost. But the people had become so adept at these dangerous operations that European travellers who were present at the court have testified in their diaries that there were none in the world better at looking after, training and controlling the wild animals than these keepers. They brought the elephants and beasts of prey into the arena, let them loose and exercised control over them...Tigers were often pitted against leopards, but the leopards were so powerful that the tigers could hardly ever beat them.

This is further confirmed with many incidents in menageries and animal acts mixing the two, the leopard always kills the tier

Already within the steel inclosure was a great, heavy bodied tiger, and the look of searching ceasefed... struggling in vain as it sought to loosen the hold of a leopard at its throat, for Beauty bad attacked again. Five shots were left and Delaine fired them all at the two beasts which came at him in one. Beauty clinging grimly to the Bengal’s throat... Crowds. The madness of panic—then quiet. Beauty was back in her cage again, licking at the clawmarks on her shoulders and breast, yowling softly now and then with the pain of it, but in her brain the tugging pain had ceased and there was peace. Beauty had killed a murderer—

German trainer had to replace a tiger who was killed by the leopard:

When it was over and the fur had settled five animals were dead and the dancing cougar maimed for life. Only one, a lion, was unhurt, he having sat out the affair on a high perch. As I increased my group by bringing in new animals, of course, there were troubles. The creatures would fight, at times, and I had to make peace with the whip and the pistol. I have never used any red hot irons and don't approve of them. Sometimes a beast was killed. One of my very best performers is a leopard that has killed a cheetah, two boarhounds, a tiger and a polar bear,

What about pound for pound," I asked the animal expert who has spent most of his life 'bringing 'em back alive.' "There's only one answer for that one," Buck said. "It is the black leopard, a pack of dynamite which is always looking for a fight, a lightweight that even the tiger ducks.

[i]Scene at Wallace's Winter Quarters Outrivals Description Menagerie is In an Uproar. Special to News - Democrat Peru, Ind., Feb. 6. A battle to the death, amid the roaring of lions, tigers, jaguars, hyenas and bears, occurred in the rehearing area at one Hagenbeck - Wallace circus winter quarters a few days ago. The combatants were a big Bengal tiger and a young leopard, and the latter still lives, having clawed out the vitals of the larger beast. The conflict lasted fully thirty minutes and was witnessed by thirty men, all of whom were powerless to separate the combatants. The big tiger was the one seen In Hagenbeck's show at the St. Louis exposition and had always been hard to control. The tiger was valued at $1,000. Yesterday, for the first time this winter, the trainer, Philip Casting, attempted a rehearsal. All the animals used In the big act were brought into the arena and all seemed as tame as pets except the tiger. Immediately on reaching the arena the big brute became vicious and attempted to strike the trainer, who forced the animal Into a corner. Casting then went ahead with the rehearsal. As soon as his back was turned the tiger struck the leopard, which sat on a box near by. The smaller animals struck back and then the battle began. Twice the leopard fastened Its teeth In the tiger's neck and was thrown off. Anticipating a fierce struggle, Casting hurried the other animals out of the arena and then gave his attention to the fighting beasts. The tiger sprang at him and he was forced to quit the arena in order to escape with his life. The leopard tried to get away but was not quick enough. The tiger tossed the leopard In the air a couple of times and beat the smaller animal with Its large paws overthe head almost to Insensibility but finally the, smaller animal got its second wind and fought both ferociousness that was remarkable. While being held down the leopard clawed the tiger's breast until there were great wide gashes in the big ani mal, which soon began to weaken. Continuing its clawing, the leopard, finished its enemy by tearing out the tiger's vital organs. Then the leopard, torn and bleeding, fell exhausted beside the dead body of its adversary. The trainer and other attaches of the circus say the growls and howls and howls of the other animals during the battle were terrific and the excitement was intense.

But quick as the Bengal tiger had been, the panther was quicker. All thought of Jealousy vanished at Eight of the attack on his mistress. Before the tiger coulduse tooth or claw the lithe, strong-limbed panther had launched himself right at the tiger's throat. Over and over on the floor of the cage the two great cats rolled. Ordinarily the panther ?would have been no match for the far larger tiger. But the panther had caught his grip first, settling his sharp, deep-biting teeth in the tiger's throat. This prevented the tiger's using his teeth effectually. But his claws, especially those on his strong hind legs, could be used. Again and again he struck out with them, ripping through the panther's skin like a soft glove. But he could not shake the deadly grip Chita had on his throat. Although he might be torn to pieces by the great claws. Chita meant to hold on until he felt his teeth meet in his opponent's windpipe. And through all the terrible struggle. Diogenes, the Numldlan lion, sat on his pedestal, lazy, goodnatured, only calmly Interested in the life and death fight of his fierce fellow pupils. "When the circus men separated the two big cats the Bengal tiger was dead, and the black panther, torn In twenty pieces, was dying. Carmen was unhurt, except for a few slight bruises caused by her fall on the floor of the cage.

I think you should ask shere kahn. lol It seems that in chinese martial arts not only does the leopard fu beats the tiger fu, so does the crane fu

on the subject, leopards transverse terrains pretty much more than any other big cat, hence they compete with alot more predators, they go up against, himalayin bears, sloth bears, different sub-species of tigers, gorillas, monkeys an chimps...they also go against russian bears, african and asiatic lions too, leopards also kill cheetahs and medium size crocs...like the jaguar, he can turn pure black. This gives the leopard the most ultimate stealth at night...he can be running directly at you an you wouldnt even see him.

The tiger might have size an strength over the leopard, but the leopard is twice as quick an agile, more cunning sly an versatile, can scale a tree in seconds which hardly any other of the big cats can manage a feat so quick on small branch trees an can survive nearly 3 storys of free fall springs:

Just because the tiger is bigger doesnt mean he'll automatically win, leopards can kill eland, which is an animal that can weigh up to 2,000-4,000 lbs. The leopard might not be the biggest and baddest, but the spotted one is pretty much the definition of the word...Ninja.

My bad if the article isnt fully viewable, heres one that shows the whole thing:

As the article states, theres only one animal the gorilla has to fear in a stand up fight, and thats the leopard:
http://cdnc.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/cdnc?a=d&d=SN19200221.2.83

Thats mostly because the leopard is the gorillas only natural predator, if gorillas were in lion country, we'd probably have tons of dead gorillas...but still a impressive feat from leopards.

Leopard predation on chimpanzees (over five years) is reported in the Tai forest and includes nine likely attacked individuals, but none directly observed and only one leopard scat with chimpanzee bones and hair [Boesch, 1991; Zuberbühler and Jenny, 2002]. Leopards in Tai were once reported to scavenge a chimpanzee carcass [Jenny and Zuberbhler, 2005]. Evidence of leopard predation on chimpanzees (6/196 leopard scats) has also been recorded in Lope, Gabon [Henschel et al., 2005]. Evidence of leopard predation on other great apes is rare, although Fay et al. [1995] described a probable leopard attack on lowland gorilla including a digit in leopard scat and recent systematic studies of leopard scats in sympatric areas have revealed evidence of predation on gorillas [9/196 scats: Henschel et al., 2005] and bonobos [1/5 scats: D’Amour et al., 2006]. Rates of leopard predation on apes therefore range up to 5% of scat samples.

Apart from humans, gorillas do not really have enemies. The only predator to prey on gorillas is the leopard. Walter Baumgärtel found the remains of several gorillas after they had been killed by leopards in the Virunga Volcanoes. Other hints were found in Gabon and the Central African Republic (Tutin & Fernandez 1991; Fay et al. 1995)
http://www.angela-meder.de/publik/eep.pdf

As large, group-living primates, gorillas have few natural predators. There are some records of leopards killing adult gorillas (e.g. Baumgartel, 1976) and young gorillas could potentially be taken by pythons or eagles, but infants are normally protected by the adults

Leopards kill adult eland:

So what would make the tiger not be able to be killed by a leopard? A leopard can kill an animal 3x as heavy as a tiger, the only argument I ever see is that elands dont have claws and paws to swipe out and protect them selves, sounds rather stupid, then how do leopards kill leopards and tigers kill tigers? I think its just a hard fact to accept from extreme tiger fans.

The largest prey reported killed by a leopard was a 900 kg (2,000 lb) male eland.(C) Sunquist, Melvin E .; Sunquist, Fiona (2002). Wild Cats of the World. Chicago: University of Chicago Press. p.325. ISBN 0-226-77999-8.

Leopards are the only natural predators of adult chimpanzees and gorillas, although the cat may sometimes choose to avoid these as they are potentially hazardous prey, especially large male silverback gorillas.

Allll rightttt.
The bodies of the five *year old sub*adulttigress and eight year *old panther were found about 20m away from each other near the Manjakadu river bed inside the tiger reserve.

According to wildlife experts, though tigers and panthers can live in the same environment, they are both territorial animals and rivals too. So, clashes can occur and, when a sub*adult tiger is pitted against a fullgrown panther, both can be injured and even killed
