Apparently this is not as uncommon as most people think for a smaller leopard to kill a much bigger tiger, it seems many fights have taken place for rulers of india and the leopard was always reported to have won:

At one end of the preserve, on the river bank, large expanses of land were enclosed by bamboo fences or iron railings for wild animal combat. These were exactly opposite Shah Manzil on the other side of the river, which is very narrow at this spot. It was easy enough to make beasts of prey and rutting elephants fight each other but it was a very difficult matter to control these fights. But the people had become so adept at these dangerous operations that European travellers who were present at the court have testified in their diaries that there were none in the world better at looking after, training and controlling the wild animals than these keepers. They brought the elephants and beasts of prey into the arena, let them loose and exercised control over them...Tigers were often pitted against leopards, but the leopards were so powerful that the tigers could hardly ever beat them.

on the subject, leopards transverse terrains pretty much more than any other big cat, hence they compete with alot more predators, they go up against, himalayin bears, sloth bears, different sub-species of tigers, gorillas, monkeys an chimps...they also go against russian bears, african and asiatic lions too, leopards also kill cheetahs and medium size crocs...like the jaguar, he can turn pure black. This gives the leopard the most ultimate stealth at night...he can be running directly at you an you wouldnt even see him.

The tiger might have size an strength over the leopard, but the leopard is twice as quick an agile, more cunning sly an versatile, can scale a tree in seconds which hardly any other of the big cats can manage a feat so quick on small branch trees an can survive nearly 3 storys of free fall springs:

Just because the tiger is bigger doesnt mean he'll automatically win, leopards can kill eland, which is an animal that can weigh up to 2,000-4,000 lbs. The leopard might not be the biggest and baddest, but the spotted one is pretty much the definition of the word...Ninja.

Thats mostly because the leopard is the gorillas only natural predator, if gorillas were in lion country, we'd probably have tons of dead gorillas...but still a impressive feat from leopards.

So what would make the tiger not be able to be killed by a leopard? A leopard can kill an animal 3x as heavy as a tiger, the only argument I ever see is that elands dont have claws and paws to swipe out and protect them selves, sounds rather stupid, then how do leopards kill leopards and tigers kill tigers? I think its just a hard fact to accept from extreme tiger fans.

The bodies of the five *year old sub*adulttigress and eight year *old panther were found about 20m away from each other near the Manjakadu river bed inside the tiger reserve.

According to wildlife experts, though tigers and panthers can live in the same environment, they are both territorial animals and rivals too. So, clashes can occur and, when a sub*adult tiger is pitted against a fullgrown panther, both can be injured and even killed
