Hi there, I obtained AABC in a level back in 2019 , then a third honor engineering degree, which is obviously not good enough for med schools. Should I retake my a levels and apply to standard five year course?

I think for standard entry as a graduate they still require you to have a 2:1 for most places.

I've already done a learning diary from my placements. Would I take this with me into interviews?

At my med school you are not allowed to take anything with you to the MMI stations - the content of the stations are strictly confidential too.

(Note: I am an interviewer)

Pretty sure you aren’t allowed to actually have notes in with you and you kind of wouldn’t want to given that it would be obvious you were pre prepared and you want spontaneity

Exactly. Constantly reading your notepad is definitely a negative (even if it was allowed).

Again, most places will only look at the classification of the first degree you sat

Yes:

Going into medical school, is it important to get into research as well considering being a bioscience graduate?
Maybe considering clinical research

ty! i had already started looking into graduate entry, but i was told that we had to do a natural science if we were to do graduate entry into medicine. Is this true?

No it isn't. Did you go on the link? It tells you which graduate entry programmes accept non-science degrees - not that this matters since forensic science is obviously a science degree.

Not really. Most med students don't do much research during medical school. It's much more important to get your UCAT, BMAT and or GAMSAT scores, MMIs and meet your degree requirements.

Hi!

I’m hoping this is the right place to ask this, if it’s not please let me know! So, I’m late to considering medicine honestly. Up until this point, I’d been wanting to apply for biology, so everything I’ve done has been directed towards that. Would I still have time to do everything I need for a good application? Especially considering applying and preparing for UCAT, and any work experience if that’s even possible at this point?

I got AAA in my AS mocks (biology, chemistry, maths) and I’m doing an EPQ on invasive species (which I might end up dropping if I apply for medicine?). At GCSE, I got 9999999887B.

Where would you suggest I go from here? Thanks!

You’ve still got time but you need to start now with the UCAT prep as scoring well on admission tests is really important.

There’s nothing wrong with your GCSE’s and predictions and there are several virtual WE experiences available. You’ve also still got time for volunteering and most part time jobs will include important qualities associated with a medicine career - have you got one?

I don’t have a part time job yet - I was looking for one before lockdown started but then covid happened. I’m planning on getting one as soon as I can though.

It’s great you’ve done placement diaries perhaps you could do them for reading/MOOCs or virtual work experience depending on what else you have. They are great for bringing your personal statement together and looking over pre interview though

Thank you for your input, I'll definitely do this.

Oh okay, I did think you couldn't bring in notes as it would make you look like you haven't got a clue what you're on about!
So i am having doubts on whether i should do medicine as i have heard you need to sacrifice a lot like family time( i value family a lot and in the future want to be there for my kids) , and you may not have a work life balance(i value this as well) and that you cannot travel as i want to travel as well like the countries are not a lot but its mainly Asia since i am a weeb (anime lover) and a k pop and k drama fan. like could you maybe give me a clue of what it is like? like i know in America the hours are very absurd. What scares me is if i quit this dream i don't know what else i would enjoy as i really love medicine and i would feel the satisfaction of knowing i saved a life and that i made a difference and i don't know another career like this. sorry for the inconvenience.

As many medics on this forum would say.. If you're not sure about doing medicine.. Don't. Although I don't agree with the saying, it must have some weight to it.

Usually only in junior doctor training, but this depends on specialty.

and that you cannot travel as i want to travel as well like the countries are not a lot but its mainly Asia since i am a weeb (anime lover) and a k pop and k drama fan. like could you maybe give me a clue of what it is like?

Wait what? That's not true at all. I went to an international conference in Japan 2 years ago - it was because I was presenting there and I got some financial support to go too.

And I was asked to go to an international conference in Ireland last year and again presented there - here's my thread on it (https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=6124108). Again I was invited to go so had sponsorship.

Doctors travel everywhere, they like going on holidays (well most of the people I do anyway). Plus there is plenty of opportunities to work abroad or just attend conferences.

like i know in America the hours are very absurd.

As an international medical graduate to the US, you wouldn't be able to work in competitive locations or specialties - so unless you wanted to be a family medical doctor in rural midwest or somewhere, then forget it. You'd also have to take the USMLE.

What scares me is if i quit this dream i don't know what else i would enjoy as i really love medicine and i would feel the satisfaction of knowing i saved a life and that i made a difference and i don't know another career like this. sorry for the inconvenience.

Don't do it because of fear of missing out. Do it because you want to do Medicine and only Medicine.

What about OBG/YN i think its a great career but it is apart of surgery so i think that means long hours but im also considering a therapist as i love talking to people and helping solve their problems and im passionate about mental health.

It's Obs and Gynae in the UK, rather than OB/GYN which is the US way of calling the specialty.

Have you done any work experience? There are medical obs and gynae doctors (specialising mostly in Obs) and surgical ones (specialising in Gynae) - both will have on-call committments because childbirth and gynae emergencies don't wait until 9-5!

As for being a therapist - you'll need to do some work experience for that too.

I cannot even solve basic chemical equations, does this tell me I would not be good enough for medicine?
