Don't you just love to be British?

According to Wikepedia, "At its height it [the British Empire] was the largest empire in history and, for over a century, was the foremost global power."

It's so great to be a Briton we are so proud.

PS. America sucks http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/images/icons/icon10.gif

Weathers crap, so not really.
Problem is, Britain isn't a huge empire anymore. We were born after the golden age.

Why America sucks? America is our child. We created them and have watched them blossom into the world's greatest superpower. Pretty big achievement :five:
Heh, take a look at our society? Look at the culture which we have created and if you still persist on being proud about being British then you must be either delusional or completely ignorant.

I like being British. I recognise the advantages I have had by being brought up in this country that I wouldn't have had in other places. But proud? Why would I be proud of something I can't control, and in the case of the Empire, doesn't even exist anymore? The British Empire isn't something we should be holding on to - it is essential that we let go of this exploitative past and progress into an inclusive, open society.

Omi god what an socialist green-head hippy that final comment was.
The "hippy" as you call him has a point: you can't be proud of the achievements you weren't a part of.

British culture is the most perfect culture. Including our tolerance to other races and cultures (compare with Jews in Israel, Muslims in the middle east, and Christians in the US) and you just can not beat British humour. Fair enough the class differences aren't perfect and the chavs our welfare system has created aren't the best people to decide our country's future, but they aren't really 'British' and aren't our culture.

Elucidate your point.
whenever i see something this ridiculous on the internet i always assume it's trolling. however i think trolling is just as stupid, if not more, as responding to trolls themselves. but anyways... umm the british empire is nothing to be proud of. we wen't round the world invading countries, suppressing the local populations and stealing recourses. not to mention the slave trade. being powerful is not admirable, what is admirable is the choosing to do what is right. the British empires values were based on racism and a fundamental belief that the british culture was objectively better, justifying their suppression of cultures and people that they deemed uncivilised. Not allot better than the Nazis.

Identifying with a group also means you take a Rosie in it's past accomplishments. It is Human nature to group themselves together and compete with other groups.

Of course you can. You can be proud of your heritage because it is your heritage. That's where you came from so you can be proud to come from there and you can be proud to represent that past or the history of your country. You could always emigrate from some other country/continent (Asia is a popular place to come from) and immigrate to Britain and be proud to be a part of Britain and be proud of its history, because you are British.

I find patriotism absolutely idiotic. Anyone with a shred of knowledge knows that the British Empire was, and still is responsible for so much violence, division and trauma. I'm fascinated by our history, but to be proud of something that has such sinister consequences is misguided and mindless.

Also, it's worth mentioning that Britain's moment is over: we're hanging desperately onto the coattails of other powerful countries, who still have the resources and space. Our epoch is over. The only reason why our fall from relevance is slower than other empires in the past, is due to the importance of our language for global relations.

Actuallly very different to the Nazi's.

Anyway the British empire is one of the main reasons the slave trade was ended
