Northumbria uni-- which halls???

Scroll to see replies

Just thought I'd say, the Fresher's wristband is only for stuff on at the student's union but it's decent. Last year there was a school disco, headphone disco, hypnotist night & a DJ set where Pendulum arrived around midnight. Also, there's some free activities during Fresher's, like a thing to meet new people and such. If anyone's going, I'm gonna be there as part of the Welcome Week staff so I may just see some of you around

So are there other things on for freshers week? As in you don't have to pay £55 to do freshers? Also can anyone go to the other bits if there are any? And what kind of things would there be if there was?

hey all! i need some quick advice on which halls are the best. Ive ruled all the quay point/winn studio type buildings out as they are too expensive (£110+).
Im looking for one ranging from around £85-£110. Which is the most modern, nicely sized and social hall? My fav's are Victoria Hall, Camden Court, Stephenson Building and Glenamara. any ideas??
Thanks in advance:smile:

Camden Court is lush. I stayed there in first year

Basically, I just got an accommodation offer for Quay Point and I'm not sure what to do.
It looks nice enough. As well as clean and safe.
But I was really hoping for Victoria Halls.
Is there a possibility that I'll get more offers throughout this week?
If so... is it possible that I could get another offer from a different accommodation in the "City Ensuite" category?

Thanks (:

Where abouts are you in Quay Point? I have also been offered a place

As I say, there's stuff on during the day, but for the main events (acts, themed club nights, etc), you'll have to pay to get in there (but not sure if all do - although the 007 theme ball can be accessed by paying in). The daytime stuff is like learning how to survive at uni, meet people and generally enjoying yourself.

Also (just out of curiosity), anyone starting Applied Chemistry this year? I'm in my second year but did a foundation last year.

Well you can go along with money to pay in but entry isn't guaranteed. That's because those with passes get priority and there's slightly more passes sold than the capacity of the venues (as not everyone will turn up to everything). The door staff wait until a certain time before entering those without bands and only admit a few at a time.
However, if you have a friend with a band and they aren't going to an event that you wanna go to, ask to borrow their band for the night. I did that with a flatmate of mine last year as didn't go to Fresher's Ball but she really wanted to go.
Bumping up this thread as found it really useful! Wonder if anyone that posted on this last year would comment again saying how their accommodation was in the end?

I've applied for En Suite City as first (in preferences wrote Victoria or Camden), then Glenamara, then Stephenson & Clapham.

Hi Dean
Glenamara is, from my experience last year, ok. We had a few teething problems with the flat but, if you get a good one, it should be alright.
Victoria Halls and Camden Court are lovely (they seemed a lot more social than our halls, although that may have been because we were right out of the way in the corner of our accommodation).
Hope that wherever you go you enjoy it
Also, what course (just out of curiosity)?
Hi David!

Thanks for responding! I'm trying not to stress out about halls anymore. My offer is conditional anyways, so my application isn't going to be processed until I can send proof of my results so there's a chance I won't get my first choices! What are you doing this coming year with accommodation? I've heard that generally a lot of people go into private lets after 1st year!
I'm doing fine art- I'm a painter  and yourself?

Hey
I stayed in Camden this year and basically it's alright depending on what floor your on . Our flat was a decent one the kitchen was quiet spacious which was good for pre drinks but i knew people on the 5th and 6th floor and there kitchen/social area was TINY.Also would say your better to go to Quay Point because for £4 more you actually get a double bed and a proper bathroom and a sofa with a tv .Camdens bathroom is actually terrible its one small washroom doesn't even have tiles on the floor , the shower floods continiously and you have to stop the shower mid showering to try stop it flooding , also know a few people who had mould growing in thier rooms/bathrooms and unite wouldn't do anything about it , you get about 4 cushion chairs in your kitchen which are a different height to the table which is arkward for pre drinks . But part from that its alright. Also would say I did Fine Art this year whatever you do don't do print and don't ask Mick for anything or help on anything he's so unhelpful and doesn't give a **** . hope that helps .Also camden vending machines are a right rip off don't use them one time i paid 80p for a curly wurly and it got stuck in vending machine !

Hi Dean. Next year (my third), I'm in a private rent again (although not the same one as this year - some people just don't get on whatsoever!)
Yeah , the vast majority go into private lets after year 1. When it comes to getting a house/flat through a landlord, there's a few main areas for living: Jesmond (rather posh/affluent area - nice but expensive and a mile or so from the Uni/ city centre); Heaton (roughly same distance, if not closer than Jesmond, not as classy but still a nice area in my opinion and generally a LOT cheaper); Sandyford (very close to Uni, as in around the corner, price wise in between the first two and a nice area, although no big supermarket, etc nearby); and the centre (can be shabby and rowdy but there's some gems in there).
Fine Art, supposed to be quite decent (although I am RUBBISH at art). I'm a scientist myself, Applied Chemistry.
Don't stress man, just look to the future and hope for the best.
Where are you from anyway? And what are your other Uni choices?

Eek Lana, thanks for the heads-up! I've just put Victoria Hall ahead of Camden after reading that! Oh cool, might see you about the art department then!! Do you enjoy it there? What is your specialism too, sculpture, performance, painting etc? x

Hi again David! Sorry for such slow replies by the way! Thanks for the info on private accommodation, I'm sure I'll be hoking out this thread again in a years time if I'll be applying for it myself!
Applied Chemistry?! Lord! I did Chemistry for GCSE and it was the worst two years of my life. To this day I have no idea what a mole is in science terms and I still managed a B! Hallelujah!
I'm from Bangor. That's Northern Ireland Bangor, not Wales- it's half an hour away from Belfast! Wee seaside town. And yourself? I chose Reading as my insurance but and also applied to Edinburgh, Leeds and Ulster (Belfast), but since visiting Northumbria in February it's the only one I've been interested in.

My mate has been in Winn Studios a few times (I'll leave the reason to your imagination) and said it was so nice in there.
Hi, I have just finished my first year at Edinburgh Napier University but have dropped out and am moving back home to Newcastle to start up again at Northumbria University. Despite having a house here, I loved my independence too much to want to move back in with the family so am looking at going into student halls. Although I have lived here for 19 years I've never really had any reasons to look at the student accommodation so am just as clueless as people who aren't from here. I specifically would like to know which are the most "sociable/fun/partying" halls so if anyone who has lived there last year or previously could tell me that would be much appreciated!

Hello,

I've applied for the non-ensuite halls. I was wondereing which is the best choice of Stephenson, Clapham and Glenamara? I'd prefer somewhere without too much partying, so I can get some sleep at night (it takes me forever to get to sleep even when its quiet!). I've heard Lovaine is a real dump,so I placed Glenamara beforehand, even though its the 'party hall'. I appreciate your thoughts, and I send my thanks in advance!
