I'm a third year Psychology student, lived in Alaw in my first year, and happy to answer any questions about my course or halls! I was also in the cheerleading squad for the first two years so I guess that's my specialist subject
I know there are a few of us around so everyone join in and potential/freshers students, ask away!
FAQs
What kind of shopping does Bangor have? In upper Bangor, shopping is quite limited – there’s a Morrisons (where most students do their shop), a few charity shops, some takeways/restaurants, a health food store, an independently run café, a music shop and a book store. There’s also an Asian supermarket. However, in lower Bangor, the town centre, there’s lots more shops. In the town centre (this is not an exhaustive list!) there’s a Debenhams, WHSmiths, Topshop, Republic, New Look, butchers, Iceland, Lidl, Aldi, Marks and Spencer, Boots, Poundland… It’s a standard high street really.
What halls are best for X subject? Honestly, unless you’re doing Primary Education and Sports Science, Ffridd halls are the best for any subject. All of the Ffridd halls are equally as good as each other. There are new and old halls but the only real difference is the price and the modernity of the kitchens (all Ffridd halls have an ensuite room apart from Reichel). Alaw, Peris, Enlli and Reichel are the furthest from the entrance to Ffridd – but closest to the train station and Normal Site and the quietest halls. It’s really irrelevant which hall on Ffridd you’re in. Normal site halls are a bit of a pain if you’re not doing Prim. Ed. or SS as you have to walk the 20 minutes into Bangor before each lecture, and if you don’t have a car, getting shopping and to other places can be tricky. However Normal site halls are said to be the friendliest of the bunch. A lot of sports activities take place on Normal site.
What’s Bangor like for X subject? Bangor is generally considered very good for Psychology, Marine Biology and Sports Science. Other subjects are sometimes less well supported in terms of facilities. The best place to look for info on your subject is around a few different league tables, such as the Times, The Guardian and The University Guide. Make sure to look at more than one though!
What kind of offers does Bangor give out? Generally, Bangor is a ABB – CCC range university. This varies within courses and subject areas, and some courses such as Music may require a portfolio or extensive work experience (such as nursing and primary ed.).
How much does it rain? It’s Wales – quite a lot! However it does get sunny, it can be nice up here I promise! Today is a beautiful blue sky day, so it does happen. It's often said that 'if it's sunny, it must be an open day!' I would say it’s about 50/50 rainy days and sunny days. It does snow in Winter – be aware that travel plans can be disrupted!
What are travel connections like from Bangor? There are direct trains from Bangor to London Euston, Milton Keynes, Chester, Crewe, Birmingham, Shrewsbury, Manchester, Wrexham. To get to most other places you need to change in Llandudno Junction or Chester (or elsewhere). The train service is provided by Virgin () and Arriva Wales (). There are tales told of a Stagecoach bus that leaves Bangor heading for London, but to be quite frank I don’t know anyone who’s ever been on it or where it goes from. I do know that it takes 8 hours though to get from Bangor to London by coach – it’s 2.5hours on a direct train, 3.5 at most if you have to change. Unless you really need to get the coach for medical reasons, just get the train.
What is the town like? Overall, it’s quite quiet. Pretty much everything stops after 10pm and it can feel very claustrophobic and ‘50s’ at times. However it’s also very picturesque and most of the people here are wonderful. The younger people of the town have a bit of a reputation for being chavvy and rude, but I think it’s just because there’s sod all to do here.
Is there a cinema? No, the closest cinema is in Llandudno Junction, a 20 minute train ride away. Yes, I know.
What’s the nightlife like? It’s quiet! However if you’re up for a good night out, you’ll find one. There are three main nightclubs – Embassy (in an old post office), Octagon/Peep (Occy, also known as the stickiest club in the land) and Academi (the SU). Drinks are cheap however everything shuts at 1:30/2am; so if you’re used to raving it up until 5am or later then you’ll be disappointed. There are a lot of pubs in Bangor, which includes ‘local’ Welsh pubs that no student ever goes into, and places like Paddys (the Irish bar that sells 50p vodka shots), Rascals (famous for their cocktails), the Belle Vue (quite posh but a good student chill out spot) and The Three Crowns (North Wales’s most prominent LGBT pub).
From ffridd, it is probably a 10 minute walk to the train station and also a similar walk to get to the main bus station in town. Both are very easy to get to as well.
hey do you know how far the coach station and train station is from campus? x
Do you mean for a Stagecoach bus or a town bus? I've heard stories that the Stagecoaches go from the Texaco garage on the way out of town, which is about a 25 minute walk from halls, but I've never seen anyone get on one (I used to live across the road from the garage). The train station is very close especially if you use the short cut up Convent Alley

Good idea,
I'm a 2nd Year Computer Science student, also a Peer Guide for the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science. I was in Peris last year.
What halls are you in? The new halls have a pull out under bed storage compartment - I used mine to fit shoes in It's pretty big, about a metre square. I don't know about old halls.
What are the halls in Normal site like? Specifically Seiriol? And is there wi-fi? And is there a bus or something that I can get to the Chem building? xD

Oh, good question. If no-one answers on here soon I'll ask my friend who was in Seiriol in first year for you x
The halls on normal site and not as good as those in Ffridd, but they are better then some of my friends rooms from other unis, and I think they are slightly cheaper than Ffridd.
I think the internet might be a cable (most of the internet in halls is cable), I was on the other site so not sure about buses and whatnot. It is probably a 10 min walk from Ffridd, so maybe a 20 min walk to the chem building...
There's a fair amount of pubs (52, but a fair few of them are so locally they're not worth bothering with) and about 3 clubs - Academi, the SU, Peep (you'll hear it called 'Occy' as well, it's changed name over the summer) and Embassy.
Out of the pubs, there are a few good ones, Paddys is an Irish bar that does 50p vodka shots, Rascals does cocktails and a really good rock night (I think that still runs...). The Belle Vue is nice for a quieter drink. Down in lower Bangor there's Yates, Yellow, Spoons and Varsity which are all pretty standard.
It's not a big city, the clubs close at half 1 some days, don't expect to be out every night in somewhere new but it's not bad. It's not as much of a ghost town as it was when I was a fresher!
The 3 clubs bangor has are decent, although academi (the uni club) is a bit rubbish when it's empty which is most nights apart from wednesday However peep (occy) and embassy were surprisingly good, embassy being my favourite, with peep reminding me slightly of 5th ave in manchester
Can't speak for the pubs only been to a few, although paddys in upper bangor is great and cheap

Damn, you did not just compared Occy to 5th Ave... they're leagues apart in taste and decorum! Wait til you get dragged in on a Saturday (locals) night... on second thoughts
