M1 OCR (Not MEI) Exam - 9/06/2015

Hey Guys!

I'm (resitting) doing Mechanics 1.. OCR exam board. Anyone doing it?

How are you feeling about this exam? Any questions and stuff.. we can discuss here!
We have about 3 weeks left!

I haven't seen a M1 thread. If there is, please feel free to link me to it.

Hopefully we will have an unofficial mark scheme here (after the exam).

Good Luck everyone!

Unofficial Mark Scheme:

Spoiler

Few important equations and tips:

F=ma

Fr=MuR

m1u1 + m2u2 = m1v1 + m2v2

SUVAT

s = ut + 1/2at^2

s = vt - 1/2at^2

v = u - at

v^2 - u^2 = 2as

s = 1/2t(u+v)

v = d/t

For all the above equations a has to be constant.

Differentiation of displacement gives velocity

Differentiation of velocity gives acceleration.

Integration of acceleration gives velocity

Integration of velocity gives displacement.

Max velocity is when acceleration is zero.

Remember to take direction into account.

Taut/inextensible string means that tension is constant throughout the string.

ALWAYS remember to work in components (horizontal/vertical) (parallel/perpendicular) NEVER just start randomly adding forces together.

Draw out the entire diagram, writing down everything you know.

Read the question properly.

Don't make any assumptions!

Links to answered questions in this thread:

Thanks to everyone for helping out!

If you need help on a question please feel free to tag me to your post in case it's missed. @kawehi has also offered. So quote either one of us.

Cheers.

Diagrams. Always draw the forces and stuff on the diagrams. Helps so much.

Remember to take direction into consideration.

Remember f=ma. You'll use that alot.

Loads of past papers!

:biggrin:

What parts do you struggle with the most?

The newton's third law nonsense with tension. The rest of it seems okay. Do you know of any good resources?

Not really.. generally loads of past papers help but maybe you should watch worked examples videos? :biggrin:

Does anyone know why on the questions with smooth pulleys suspended by a chain, when calculating the tension in the chain, you take the weight of the pulley and the tension in the string into account but not the weight on the send of the string across the pulley? Sorry if that doesn't make sense, an example question is Q5iva June 2013
Any c3 and/or 4 threads ?

Yes pleeease
Put your effort revusing C3 and C4. M1 is totally useless for the A*.

Hey, Hope revision is going well for everyone! Just wondered if anyone would be able to help me on Q5 (i) C on the jan 2011 paper I would really appreciate it!!! A diagram with some workings would be really helpful - Its probably really easy but I'm just so confused when I look at the mark scheme! Thanks :smile:
