you are dialling 00-1-nnn-nnn-nnnn aren't you ?
Since you're making an international call, did you add a + and 1 at the beginning of the number?
What number are you trying to dial? What number are you physically dialing? Are you dialing from the UK? Does your landline allow international calls? Is the voice American or British?

the + indicates that you should dial your local international access code ( which for UK numbering plan is 00)

Ah. I always figured it was a + everywhere. Nevermind then
Download this app Pinger or Textfree from this US AppStore, and you can make free calls to US and Canada through wifi
