from what i heard people doing PPE are more into the Civil-Service kind of thing whilst E+M guys are more into IB....obviously this shouldn't be taken as 100% since it is somewhat anecdotal evidence based on what some of the E+M posters have said on this forum. Either way...obviously he should apply for the subject which he likes more + can prepare a better application for...

good luck to him :yy:

Whilst both are respeted courses, you are wrong to state that they're the same. PPE is far better for policy-making, many areas of sivil service and academia, E&M is better for IB, consultancy, more specialised postgrad, or audit. A disadvantage for PPE students career-wise is that some of the networking events are exclusively business-school, which means E&M (and EEM) only. Also, PPE is the more academic course, E&M is applied (though still scientific), and thus the average student doing E&M is more career-fcused than your average PPE student. Lastly, employers tend to slightly favour E&M applicants because E&M has decidedly more apps per place.

Neither course will stop you from being successful, and all the factors mentioned can be compensated for by other stuff: extracurricular activities, grades, internships etc. But in terms of immediate career prospects, they are (on average) definitely not equal.
