GlaxoWellcome and Allen and Hanbury are all part of GlaxoSmithkline, which was formed a few years ago from the merger between glaxoWellcome and SmithklineBeecham.

Proctor and Gamble

There's also peeps like

Novartis
Bristol-Myers Squibb
Bayer
Pharmacia
Johnson&Johnson
Abbott Laboratories
Leo
Aventis
Pfizer
American Home Products
Eli Lilly
Schering-Plough
Allergan
AstraZenica (swalloewd up Boots Pharma about 5 years ago)
Roche
Merck and Co.
Merck Pharmaceuticals
DeNovo
Bayer
Watson

these are just a few of the bigger pharma firms that I can think of. There are also literally millions of smaller scale start up research companies out there.

There are loats of other non=pharma research companies out their that do contract research. Some of the big ones that spring to mind are:
LGC limited
Central Science Laboratory
Covance

guys, who are the biggest medicine or biological research companies??

Are you talking Pharmaceutical or Research? the Pharmacueticals do do research, but most of their data is 'top secret' and 'Commercial in Confidence' so isn't out in the public domain. For true 'research' organisations, look at MRC, CRUK, BBSRC, PPARC, etc.

Pharmacueticals would be great, but I just interested in research in general.
Any companies that offer work experience or vacation jobs??

No offence but this does seem like a Google/Searching through Company Website job
