"Tell me about a time you gave exceptional CS"

I recently passed an aptitude test for a customer service role at a popular bank. Today, I had a telephone interview, which I passed, but there were areas of the discussion I feel I could have done much better.

The question that always seems to stump me is "tell us about a time you gave exceptional customer service." I decided to give a real life example about helping a customer, but I realised it did come across that I had been a nice person - but didn't really give her what she was after.

I just need a bit of guidance about how to answer it more effectively in the future.

Thanks in advance
What example did you give? A good example would be a customer who requested something that wasn't available, and you went above and beyond to try and help them. Or perhaps there was a difficult customer and you used your skills to calm the customer down and help them find what they wanted?
