A Closer Look at Kingston University's Student Union

Considering how much time and money you're investing in furthering your education, it's important to know that there's a group of people who will always look out for your wellbeing, stand up for your views and make sure you get the best experience possible whilst in uni. This is where the student union comes in - politically independent from the uni and run by fellow students, they help host activities, campaign for important issues and try to improve uni life.

Located chiefly in the Penrhyn Road Campus, in recent years the Union of Kingston Students has managed to save students over £1.5m in rent, developed new faith and spirituality centres, created free recreational sports programmes and set up community groups to support individuals ranging from student parents to those with disabilities and mental health problems. Furthermore, during your time at Kingston, you're likely to take part in some of the many events hosted by your student union, whether that's the Freshers' Fayre, charity fundraisers or themed cultural nights - so they're an important organisation to be aware of before you arrive!

The Union of Kingston Students are also important in the functioning of societies: they offer funding to anyone interested in starting a society, and can help provide you with the resources and knowledge to successfully manage your newfound group.

Outside of helping create an enjoyable university experience, the union can support any academic problems you may be having - e.g. if you're facing any disciplinary action or need to form an academic appeal - and can also offer any non-academic welfare advice thanks to the union's own Citizens Advice Bureau adviser. Skills Development Workshops are also given by the SU if you're someone who perhaps wants to improve their leadership or possibly learn more about the skills necessary to thrive in the UK workplace.

For Kingston students and local residents, the Union of Kingston Students also currently runs a store in the heart of Kingston-upon-Thames! 'Not My Beautiful House' is a community space which allows students to sell a range of their artworks, crafts, jewellery or ceramics, as well as allowing locals to book the space and host events from as little as £20. It's worth checking out if you're around town, and can be found in the Historic Market Place in KT1.

Contact details and further information can be found on the Union of Kingston Student's website and Instagram - so if you're interested in seeing what events are coming up or what research they're currently doing, make sure to take a look!
