biochemistry durham vs bath

Hi, Im struggling to decide between these two unis for a biochemistry degree. I really like the placement scheme at Bath, but I like Durhams collegiate system? To anyone doing a life science course at either of these unis, what's your experience?

Hi there

I've heard a lot about Bath's placement scheme as well but students tend not to know that Durham has a very good placement scheme too. There isn't much information about it on the external careers website but you can make use of the amazing careers support once you're here. Each faculty has a dedicated placement manager you can approach for discussing your circumstances and receive support through your placement journey, all the way from the researching opportunities stage to securing them. I'm currently an intern for the placement manager of Arts & Humanities so can give you some insight into the level of support available. We draft a weekly newsletter containing various placement opportunities and resources, as well as hold events for students. We organised a Placement Year Conference back in November which was a week-long event with different activities like networking with employers on campus, mock assessment centre, workshops, CV reviews, free headshots and one-on-one appointments with careers advisors. The careers department also organises field-specific careers fairs like law fair, STEM fair, MSME fairs etc where companies come on campus and you can talk to their reps about what opportunities are available and how to secure a role. There is also a Student Services Portal that you can access once you are enrolled as a Durham student, which gives you access to a range of resources like CV builder, cover letter builder, LinkedIn networking tool, CV review, IT skills courses and much more.

To top that, as you've said, the collegiate system is amazing and provides you with a much more comfortable environment to socialise in apart from offering a two-tier level of support services. I'm afraid I can't provide you an insight into the biochemistry course since I'm not studying it but hopefully the other information can aid you in making a decision

Feel free to ask more questions here and I'd be happy to answer them!

Hey thanks for your reply, its really useful! Do you personally know of the types of placements that bioscience students have held in the past? Im assuming they would be mainly lab-based, but are you aware of people who have worked at Pzifer or gsk or places like that?

Hi there

As I can see from the internal Science Faculty Placement website, students have previously secured placements at companies like AstraZeneca, MSD, GSK, Abcam, Earlham Institute, LifeArc, Pirbright Institute, Labcorp Drug Development and Reckitt.
